Pepsi-Cola, the iconic carbonated soft drink manufacturer, officially entered the blockchain space on December 9, 2021, by unveiling its first ever non-fungible token (NFT) collection — the 'Pepsi Mic Drop' genesis series. The collection consists of 1,893 unique generative NFTs minted on the Ethereum blockchain, celebrating the year Pepsi-Cola was born (1893).
Pepsi Mic Drop: A Fusion of Music Heritage and Classic Flavors
The NFT designs draw inspiration from Pepsi's long-standing involvement in music and pop culture. Each token features a microphone visual with randomly generated traits, incorporating the signature colors of six iconic Pepsi variants: Classic Blue Pepsi, Silver Diet Pepsi, Red Pepsi Wild Cherry, Black Pepsi Zero Sugar, and Crystal Pepsi. This collection pays homage to the brand's storied history in music and its suite of flavors that have captivated cola-loving consumers for decades.
“Pepsi has always been a brand with a strong heritage in music and pop culture, so it's only fitting for us to bring that legacy into the new world of NFTs with a 'mic drop' of epic proportions,” said Todd Kaplan, Pepsi's Vice President of Marketing. He emphasized that the NFTs are entirely free to claim (excluding Ethereum gas fees), ensuring an inclusive and accessible opportunity for anyone to experience the exciting world of digital collectibles.
Minting Timeline and Participation
According to Pepsi's official announcement, the wallet waitlist opens on Friday, December 10 at 12:00 p.m. EST at micdrop.pepsi.com. Approved users can mint their free Pepsi Mic Drop genesis NFT on Tuesday, December 14 at 12:30 p.m. EST. Each wallet address can claim one NFT, and all tokens are algorithmically generated to be totally unique. Pepsi also confirmed that it is implementing a carbon offset program for the NFT launch to achieve a net carbon footprint of zero.
Growing Brand NFT Trend
Pepsi joins a growing list of major consumer brands entering the NFT space, including Arizona Iced Tea, Budweiser, and Coca-Cola. Just last week, Budweiser launched 1,936 NFTs to celebrate the birth of the beer can. Adidas also recently announced a collaboration with Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). These moves highlight how global brands are leveraging NFTs as powerful marketing tools to engage younger demographics and build digital communities.
The 'Pepsi Mic Drop' collection is not just a digital asset; it represents a real-time community of NFT holders. Pepsi aims to foster ongoing engagement with its fans through this initiative, marking a significant step for the soft drink giant into the metaverse and digital ownership era.
