Persistence One is building an intent-based Bitcoin interoperability infrastructure with the goal of simplifying cross-chain asset transfers and ending the current fragmentation in the Bitcoin ecosystem. Its native token XPRT is currently down 99.96% from its all-time high of $16.57, but the market has taken note of the project's strategic pivot to Bitcoin DeFi announced in July 2024.

What Is Persistence One?

Persistence One is a blockchain protocol focused on Bitcoin interoperability. According to official materials, its mission is to “reduce fragmentation across the Bitcoin ecosystem and make cross-chain value transfer intuitive for users, developers, and partners.” With the rapid rollout of Bitcoin L2s and sidechains, liquidity has become fragmented across different chains, hindering the scalability of BTCfi (Bitcoin DeFi). Persistence One leverages an intent-based mechanism: users simply express what they want to do (“I want to swap 1 BTC for USDC on another chain”), and the system handles routing, liquidity, and execution automatically, enabling fast, secure, and near-zero-slippage cross-chain swaps.

How It Works: Intent-Based Mechanism

Unlike traditional bridges that require users to manually perform multiple steps, Persistence One’s process is as follows: a user signs and submits an intent (e.g., “convert 1 BTC from Chain A to USDC on Chain B”). Multiple solvers then compete to fulfill that order. User funds are temporarily escrowed on the source chain, and only after the solver completes the order on the destination chain are the escrowed funds released to the solver. This design separates user intent from execution, greatly reducing complexity while improving security and efficiency.

Project History and Pivot

Persistence was co-founded by Tushar Aggarwal and Deepanshu Tripathi in Q2 2019 and launched publicly in January 2020. In March 2021, the Persistence Core-1 mainnet went live, with XPRT as the native token for staking, governance, and network security. In July 2024, the team announced a strategic pivot to Bitcoin DeFi. Current CEO Jeroen Develter stated that Bitcoin is the most valuable crypto asset but remains massively underutilized in DeFi because liquidity is fragmented across multiple chains. Persistence One is building interoperability infrastructure to make BTC and BTC-derivative assets seamlessly usable across DeFi.

XPRT Token Utility and Market Data

XPRT is the native token of the Persistence ecosystem and serves the following key functions:

  • Staking & Network Security: Holders can stake to participate in the Proof of Stake consensus on Core-1 chain, earning staking rewards and rebates on BTC bridging fees.
  • Governance: XPRT holders can vote on protocol parameter changes, integrations, chain upgrades, and other proposals.
  • Transaction Fees: Used to pay fees for on-chain activity on the Persistence network.
  • Ecosystem Incentives: As the protocol evolves toward its Bitcoin roadmap, XPRT continues to support network-level incentives tied to protocol usage.
As of May 25, 2026, the circulating supply is 213,368,953 XPRT, with a maximum supply of 403,308,352. The current price is down 99.96% from its ATH of $16.57, but up 61.80% from its all-time low (near zero).

Market Impact Analysis

Persistence One’s pivot coincides with the explosive growth of Bitcoin L2 ecosystems. Projects such as Rootstock, Stacks, and various Bitcoin sidechains have emerged, but cross-chain liquidity fragmentation remains a common pain point. Persistence’s intent-based mechanism differentiates it from existing bridge solutions (like Wormhole, Multichain): users do not need to understand underlying chain differences, and the system automatically optimizes execution paths. If the solution can successfully attract a large number of BTC holders to participate in DeFi, XPRT could undergo a value re-rating. However, the current XPRT price is near historical lows, and competition is fierce (including general cross-chain protocols like LayerZero and Across). Investors should monitor the actual trading volume and solver network size after mainnet launch.
