Prominent gold advocate and economist Peter Schiff has once again sounded the alarm on the cryptocurrency market, warning that Bitcoin and Ether are on the verge of a catastrophic collapse that will result in 'staggering' losses, triggering a wave of bankruptcies, defaults, and layoffs across the industry.
Gold as the Ultimate Safe Haven?
In a series of posts on social media platform X, Schiff argued that gold's recent rally has exposed Bitcoin's fragility as an investment. 'Gold is the biggest threat to Bitcoin. That's why the entire crypto industry is now attacking it,' Schiff declared on Oct. 19. 'Bitcoin hype worked when gold spent over a decade consolidating its prior gains. But now that gold is surging, there is no longer a reason for anyone to buy Bitcoin instead.' He further predicted: 'The losses that are about to hit the crypto industry will be staggering. Expect a wave of bankruptcies, defaults, and layoffs as the sector is decimated by the imminent Bitcoin and Ether crash, which will obliterate the rest of the altcoin market. There is systemic risk as well.'
Schiff had earlier stated on Oct. 16 that 'Gold is more likely to hit $1 million than Bitcoin.' He also cautioned on Oct. 15 that 'It's more likely that Bitcoin's failure to rise with gold means the party is over. Instead of a catch-up boom, expect a belated bust.' Over the years, Schiff has consistently compared the two assets, deriding Bitcoin as 'fool's gold' while praising physical gold as a reliable hedge against inflation and instability.
Bitcoin Supporters Push Back
Despite Schiff's ongoing criticism, Bitcoin proponents argue that his analysis overlooks the cryptocurrency's structural advantages, including its fixed supply, portability, and independence from centralized control. They maintain that gold's short-term dominance does not negate Bitcoin's broader role as a hedge against fiat devaluation and policy-driven inflation. Supporters also highlight that historical downturns have often preceded major rallies, suggesting that predictions of Bitcoin's demise may once again underestimate its long-term resilience.
In response to Schiff's advice to 'sell your fool's gold now and buy the real thing, or have fun going broke,' the Bitcoin community largely dismissed the remarks. One prominent analyst noted, 'Every time Schiff calls for a crash, it's a buy signal for Bitcoin.' Historical data shows that many of Schiff's past 'death warnings' for Bitcoin coincided with market bottoms, after which the cryptocurrency often experienced strong recoveries.
Market Outlook and Perspectives
As of press time, Bitcoin is trading around $65,000, while Ether hovers near $3,400. Despite gold's recent rally above $2,700 to record highs, the overall crypto market sentiment has not turned panicked. Some traders see Schiff's warnings as a potential contrarian indicator of excessive bearishness. However, not everyone is optimistic. Macro analysts point out that if the Federal Reserve maintains higher interest rates for longer, risk assets including cryptocurrencies could face sustained pressure. The true test may come from upcoming regulatory developments and macroeconomic data.
Regardless of the outcome, Peter Schiff's name once again dominates crypto community discussions. His every statement sparks heated debate, and only time will reveal the ultimate winner.
