Pi Day, meant to celebrate the Pi Network community, turned into a rout for its native token PI. The price dropped roughly 26% within 24 hours, trading near $0.2042 — an 86% decline from its all-time high.
Kraken Listing Sparks 'Sell-the-News' Dump
The primary trigger was a textbook sell-the-news event. PI surged over 30% ahead of its March 13 listing on Kraken, briefly touching $0.30 as traders front-ran the event. Once the exchange opened trading, early buyers rushed to cash out their profits, triggering a sharp reversal. This pattern is familiar in crypto: when a widely anticipated listing finally happens, the buying pressure fades, and profit-taking takes over.
Token Unlock Wave Looms
Supply concerns are adding to the pressure. According to Pi Scan, approximately 17 million PI tokens are scheduled to unlock on March 17, followed by another 16 million on March 20. The current circulating supply stands at 9.66 billion. These unlocks will inject fresh tokens into the market, raising the risk of additional selling, especially if holders choose to liquidate.
v20.2 Upgrade Status Remains Unclear
The technical backdrop is also shaky. The Pi Network team originally planned to roll out the v20.2 upgrade on March 14 (Pi Day) but later moved the date to March 12. However, as of the crash, the team had not formally confirmed whether the upgrade had completed. Some community members suspect the migration might have already occurred, but the lack of an official statement created uncertainty. Previous upgrades (v19.6 on Feb 21 and v19.9 on Mar 4) had gone smoothly, but the ambiguity around v20.2 — which was supposed to improve network security, speed, and reliability — undermined investor confidence.
Broader Crypto Weakness
The wider market isn't helping. Bitcoin dropped below $71,000, falling about 2.3% amid rising geopolitical tensions. Smaller-cap tokens like PI often suffer exaggerated moves during broad market stress.
Analysts note that PI is currently moving within a liquidity zone between $0.18 and $0.20. If the price holds above this range, a stabilization phase could follow. But a break below $0.18 might open the door to a slide toward $0.15.
