Pi Network has rolled out a new Remote Procedure Call, or RPC, server on its Testnet, giving developers a direct way to connect with the blockchain. The change is technical at its core, but the practical effect is clear: developers now have an easier route to build, test, and connect applications, while the network moves beyond its earlier coin-mining focus toward actual blockchain interaction.
One analyst described the Testnet RPC Server as more than a developer update, calling it a bridge between ideas and real apps. In practice, developers can now interact with the Pi blockchain in two primary ways. They can read on-chain data without paying fees, such as account balances, contract data, and other blockchain information, because those requests do not alter state. They can also submit actions that change data or trigger smart contract logic, though those still go through regular transaction processing and require fees.
Direct blockchain access changes the development workflow
With the RPC server live on Testnet, builders can connect directly to the Pi blockchain and test applications in a working environment before any mainnet release. The available functions include instant reads of on-chain data, transaction execution when needed, and app testing tied to real blockchain behavior. That removes some of the earlier limits that kept development on Pi more restricted.
This matters because usable infrastructure tends to shape whether a network remains experimental or starts attracting practical application work. Developers can now build around real-time data, simulate contract behavior, connect backend systems, and link user-facing interfaces to blockchain functions with fewer barriers than before.
Protocol 21 extends the upgrade path after Pi Day 2026
The RPC release also sits on top of earlier protocol work. According to the source material, Pi Network upgraded to Protocol 20 during Pi Day 2026, and the latest step advances that path to Protocol 21. Smart contract support is being extended as part of that progression, shifting the network from preparation into a stage where actual smart contract interaction becomes more feasible.
