The cause: modern publishing algorithms misidentified historically normal multi-channel publication (lectures, pamphlets, journal reprints) as copyright violations or duplicate submissions, causing the original texts to disappear from the platform.
This incident reveals a deep flaw in digital archival systems: they misread pre-digital academic practices. In the crypto world, analogous risks exist—centralized algorithm-based data governance can produce false positives due to rigid rules or lack of historical context. For instance, on-chain transaction labeling systems might wrongly flag legitimate activities such as airdrop distributions or cross-chain interoperability as suspicious.
The case underscores the importance of decentralized storage and censorship-resistant mechanisms. Storing academic assets on networks like IPFS or Arweave prevents single-point algorithmic errors from causing data loss. Additionally, smart contract governance should incorporate flexible historical appeal mechanisms to mitigate the risk of data integrity being compromised by algorithmic bias.
