Plume, in collaboration with Toku and WisdomTree, has launched a payroll pilot program allowing eligible employees to receive a portion of their salary in shares of WisdomTree's tokenized money market fund, WTGXX. The initiative aims to integrate payroll scenarios with on-chain yield-generating assets, facilitating the distribution of tokenized funds in real-world financial applications.
Pilot Details: From Paycheck to On-Chain Yield
Under the pilot, participating employees can voluntarily convert a set percentage of their wages into WTGXX tokens, which invest in short-term, high-quality debt instruments and maintain a stable net asset value of $1 per share. The tokenization technology enables employees to view and manage their holdings in real time while earning low-risk returns from the money market fund. Plume provides the underlying blockchain infrastructure for transparent and efficient token issuance, distribution, and trading; Toku handles compliance and employee enrollment as the payroll service provider; WisdomTree contributes the fund product and its tokenization framework.
Roles and Strategic Significance
“Payroll is one of the largest and most predictable cash flows in finance. Connecting it with tokenized assets helps employees build wealth more flexibly while proving blockchain’s value in real business scenarios,” said the CEO of Plume. Toku’s involvement ensures alignment with local labor laws and tax regulations, while WisdomTree backs the fund with over $10 billion in assets under management. Analysts believe this pilot could become a catalyst for mass adoption of tokenized assets—once employees accept token-based salaries, traditional financial institutions will be forced to accelerate their on-chain product offerings.
Impact on the Crypto Industry
This pilot represents a key step for Real World Assets (RWA) tokenization moving from institutional-grade applications to individual users. While tokenized funds have primarily served accredited investors, the payroll scenario directly reaches ordinary employees, dramatically expanding the user base for tokenized assets. If successful, more companies may follow suit, making “tokenized payroll” a Web3-era talent incentive mechanism. A WisdomTree executive added that the on-chain version of WTGXX has passed multiple audits and currently offers an annualized yield of approximately 4.5%, far exceeding traditional bank demand deposits.
Going forward, Plume plans to expand the pilot to more jurisdictions and explore collaborations with other tokenized funds—such as treasury bonds or real estate trusts—to further diversify employees’ salary asset options. This project may serve as a new template for the convergence of crypto and traditional finance.
