Partnership Overview and Key Details
On July 2, 2026, PNC Bank announced a strategic partnership with Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN), a leading cryptocurrency exchange. The new offering will initially target wealth and asset management clients, allowing them to buy, sell, and hold Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies directly through their PNC accounts. In return, Coinbase will receive select banking services from PNC. The deal merges PNC’s traditional banking expertise with Coinbase’s institutional-grade crypto infrastructure, aiming to meet rising demand for secure, mainstream access to digital assets.
Bank Executives on the Deal and Future Vision
William S. Demchak, Chairman and CEO of PNC, stated: “Partnering with Coinbase accelerates our ability to bring innovative, crypto financial solutions to our clients. We will also provide PNC’s best-in-class banking services to Coinbase. This collaboration enables us to meet growing demand for secure and streamlined access to digital assets on PNC’s trusted platform.” Emma Loftus, Head of Treasury Management at PNC, added that the partnership allows the bank “to explore where we think the market holds the most promise, where there’s the most demand.” She noted that PNC is also interested in commercial and corporate use cases for payments and treasury management, but those applications are not yet fully developed. Loftus sees potential for settling payments in digital assets in the future, but emphasized “that’s not tomorrow.”
Coinbase’s Perspective and Platform Strengths
Brett Tejpaul, Head of Coinbase Institutional, commented: “PNC is a market leader in delivering best-in-class products for their clients. We’re thrilled to support their entry into the digital asset market with our leading Crypto as a Service platform, which provides PNC with a powerful set of tools to develop a scalable, high-growth business, built on a foundation of uncompromising security.” Coinbase’s institutional platform offers custody, trading execution, market data, and compliance tools, enabling traditional financial institutions to quickly and securely enter the crypto space. This partnership marks another major US bank entering the crypto arena via a strategic partnership, further driving mainstream adoption of digital assets.
