Polygon has partnered with privacy infrastructure provider Hinkal to launch a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP)-powered private stablecoin payment solution, targeting the traditional finance (TradFi) sector's long-standing concerns about blockchain's full transparency. The move aims to unlock institutional use cases for stablecoins in corporate payments, payroll, and treasury.
Privacy: The Final Hurdle for Institutional Adoption
While blockchain technology offers low cost, high speed, and global accessibility, the complete visibility of on-chain transactions — revealing sender, receiver, and amounts — has discouraged many financial institutions from embracing it. Polygon stated in its announcement: “We heard it from partners across payments, payroll, and treasury: confidentiality is not a feature request, it is a prerequisite.” For enterprises handling large volumes, exposing financial details can lead to market manipulation risks, competitive intelligence leaks, and even front-running attacks.
How ZKP and Shielded Pools Deliver Bank-Level Privacy
The solution, built jointly by Polygon and Hinkal, leverages zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) to allow users to send USDC and USDT on the Polygon network while hiding the sender, receiver, and transaction amount from public view. The system employs a specialized “shielded pool” where ZKPs validate the correctness of each transfer without accessing the underlying data. Importantly, the pool also incorporates a “know-your-transaction” (KYT) screening mechanism that enables regulators to verify the legality of operations, striking a balance between privacy and compliance. Polygon claims this replicates the traditional banking model where transactions are private to the market but accessible to authorized authorities, while offering faster, cheaper, and always-on availability.
Available Now, More Privacy Features Ahead
The private send feature is already live in the Polygon wallet, where users can select a new “private send” option when initiating transfers. Polygon hinted at developing additional confidentiality-oriented functions, stating it is “working on more privacy offerings to complement the wallet and will share specifics as each piece is ready.” Industry observers note that this launch reflects a broader shift in the cryptocurrency narrative: privacy, once dismissed as a tool for illicit activity, is now recognized as a prerequisite for legitimate institutional adoption and personal data protection.
