Polygon has officially launched its zkEVM public testnet, marking a new step in its Ethereum scaling roadmap. First introduced in July, the Layer 2 network is designed to reduce transaction fees while inheriting Ethereum’s security model through zero-knowledge technology. Polygon describes the release as the “first open-source zkEVM network” and is asking developers and users to join the testnet, report bugs, and review the code published on Github.
Built for Ethereum scaling and EVM compatibility
According to the team, Polygon zkEVM is a zk-rollup solution with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility. Its goal is to improve scalability without abandoning the developer environment and application logic that have made Ethereum the leading smart contract platform. The project summary says the network uses cryptographic zero-knowledge technology to validate off-chain transaction computation and provide fast finality.
Polygon said scaling the EVM with zero-knowledge proofs is a major technical challenge. The company’s stated objective is to preserve the parts of Ethereum developers already value while unlocking the performance gains of ZK proofs. By opening the testnet to the public, the team hopes to “battle-test” the system and speed up its path toward a future mainnet launch.
Uniswap, Aave, Lens and others join testing
Several well-known projects are already participating in the early testing phase. DeFi protocols Uniswap and Aave are joining the zkEVM testnet, along with gaming studio Midnight Society and social platform Lens. Their involvement gives Polygon an opportunity to test the network across multiple categories, including decentralized finance, gaming, and social applications.
The launch comes as Ethereum’s Layer 2 sector becomes increasingly competitive. Projects such as Loopring, Zksync, Arbitrum, Boba, Aztec, Immutable X, and Optimism are all pushing solutions aimed at faster transactions, lower fees, and better scalability. While some rely on zero-knowledge systems and others use optimistic rollups or validium designs, Polygon argues that zkEVM stands out for its push toward EVM-equivalence.
Current version classified as Type 3
Polygon also acknowledged that the current testnet is not yet its final form. In the framework discussed by Vitalik Buterin, the existing Polygon zkEVM is placed in the “Type 3” category, meaning it is almost EVM-equivalent but still makes certain trade-offs to improve proving time and simplify development. The company said its long-term goal is to reach “Type 2”, where Polygon zkEVM would look exactly like Ethereum from the inside. For the team, the public testnet is an important step toward that target.
