Polymarket has once again demonstrated the power of crypto-native prediction markets, allowing users to bet on virtually any real-world event. The latest phenomenon: a market on the potential divorce of Andy Byron, CEO of software company Astronomer, and the company’s Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot. The bet surged after the two executives appeared together on a kiss cam during a Coldplay concert, sparking viral speculation of infidelity.
Market Rules and Collapsing Odds
Listed as the “Astronomer CEO Parlay,” the prediction market stipulates that for the bet to resolve positively, both executives or their respective spouses must publicly announce their intention to divorce before August 17. When the market first opened, roughly 25% of participants believed a divorce was possible. However, the odds for “Yes” have since plummeted to below 4% after it was revealed that Cabot had already been divorced since 2022, making a positive resolution mathematically impossible under the current rules. Despite this, degen traders have poured $97,542 into the market, overwhelmingly betting on “No.”
Fake Apology and Social Media Clues
Following the kiss cam incident, a statement purportedly from Byron circulated on social media, reading: “What was supposed to be a night of music and joy turned into a deeply personal mistake playing out on a very public stage.” Astronomer staff quickly flagged the statement as fake. Meanwhile, Byron’s wife, Megan Kerrigan Byron, removed the Byron surname from her social media handles, fueling speculation about the state of their marriage. No official statements have been issued by Astronomer or Byron himself.
Polymarket's 'Bet on Anything' Culture
This is not the first time Polymarket has attracted attention for celebrity gossip or controversial events. The platform previously hosted markets on Mark Zuckerberg’s divorce, the Strait of Hormuz disruption, and even the outcome of political elections. Crypto degens—traders known for high-risk, high-reward bets—thrive on such event-driven markets, often disregarding logical constraints. The Astronomer CEO divorce market exemplifies how prediction markets can monetize viral moments, while also raising ethical questions about betting on personal lives. As of now, the market remains open until the August 17 deadline, but with Cabot’s marital status already known, the “Yes” outcome appears virtually impossible.
