As the U.S. government shutdown approaches its 30th day, traders on decentralized prediction platform Polymarket are signaling that a near-term resolution looks increasingly unlikely. In the market asking when the shutdown will end, total trading volume had climbed to nearly $2.92 million as of Oct. 26, with the “Nov. 16 or later” outcome leading at 49%.

Market pricing shifts toward a longer standoff

Current odds suggest participants are moving away from expectations of a quick deal. The next most likely window is Nov. 4–7 at 18%, followed by Nov. 12–15 at 14%. Short-dated bets have lost traction: the Oct. 27–30 bracket stands at just 4%, while Oct. 31–Nov. 3 is around 10%.

Polymarket’s live chart shows the “Nov. 16+” contract gaining steadily through October, rising from about 25% at the start of the month to nearly 49%. According to the report, each “Yes” share in that bracket was trading at roughly 48.7 cents, indicating that bettors see a meaningful chance the shutdown could extend well into late November or beyond.

Shutdown odds intersect with broader market risk

If that outcome materializes, the shutdown could become the longest in modern U.S. history. With negotiations still stalled and government services under strain, prediction market pricing appears to reflect expectations of prolonged political friction.

The timing also overlaps with a packed macro and political calendar. The Kobeissi Letter said on X that the week would be “action packed,” pointing to the Federal Reserve’s upcoming rate decision and comments from Chair Jerome Powell during a data blackout period.

At the same time, major technology companies including Microsoft, Google, Meta, Apple, and Amazon are scheduled to report earnings. The report notes that these firms represent a combined market capitalization of $15.2 trillion. It also highlights President Trump’s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi two days before a proposed 100% tariff on Chinese imports is set to take effect. Against that backdrop, Polymarket’s odds are being watched not only as a bet on Washington’s budget impasse, but also as a real-time indicator of sentiment around wider U.S. political and economic uncertainty.
