Princeton University is ending one of its longest-standing academic traditions as the spread of AI tools forces a rethink of exam integrity. Starting on July 1, 2026, the university will require proctors for in-person exams, bringing to a close a 133-year system that explicitly barred exam monitoring. The measure was approved at a faculty meeting on May 11, 2026, with only one dissenting vote.

A historic honor system faces a modern test

The policy dates back to 1893, when Princeton students petitioned to remove instructors from examination rooms. What followed was an honor-based framework built on mutual trust between students and faculty, with academic integrity cases handled by a student-led Honor Committee. Over time, the ban on proctoring was written directly into university rules and became a defining feature of Princeton’s academic culture.

The university is not eliminating the Honor Code itself. Under the new system, faculty members or designated proctors must be physically present during in-person exams as witnesses to what occurs in the room, but they are not expected to intervene directly. Suspected violations will still be referred to the student-run Honor Committee. In practice, Princeton is changing the operational rules behind the system, not the core language of the code.

AI has changed what cheating looks like

According to proposal documents, the main issue is not that students have suddenly become more willing to cheat. Instead, AI has altered the observability of misconduct. With AI tools easily available on small personal devices, suspicious behavior is now much harder for classmates to identify. A phone on a desk may look harmless, but it can also be used to generate answers in real time.

That shift matters because Princeton’s long-standing model depended heavily on peer observation and peer reporting. If students can no longer tell whether misconduct is taking place, the underlying enforcement mechanism becomes far less effective.

Survey results show the reporting system is weak

Princeton cited a 2025 senior survey with more than 500 respondents that pointed to a troubling gap between awareness and enforcement. In the survey, 29.9% of students said they had cheated at some point during their time at the university. Another 44.6% said they knew of classmates cheating but stayed silent. Only 0.4% reported actually turning in a peer.

Proposal materials said some students are reluctant to report others because they fear online exposure, social retaliation, or bullying within peer groups. In that environment, AI makes an already fragile honor-based reporting model even harder to sustain.

Princeton’s decision highlights a broader challenge for higher education: how to preserve academic integrity when generative AI changes both the ease and the visibility of cheating. For a university that once made unproctored exams part of its institutional identity, the move marks not just a procedural update, but a significant recalibration of trust in the AI era.
