Post-quantum security firm Project Eleven has warned that quantum computing could threaten Bitcoin wallet security as early as 2030. According to the company, the challenge is not limited to cryptography itself. Any move by Bitcoin toward post-quantum protection would require broad coordination across the network and its surrounding infrastructure.
More Than a Technical Upgrade
Project Eleven argues that a transition to post-quantum cryptography would involve far more than updating code. Users, exchanges, custodians, and miners would all need to participate in a coordinated migration. That makes the issue both technical and logistical, especially in a decentralized system where changes are rarely implemented quickly or uniformly.
In the company’s view, the core problem is execution. Even if suitable post-quantum tools are available, the real question is whether the Bitcoin ecosystem can align on timing, implementation, and operational readiness. Wallet upgrades, asset transfers, infrastructure compatibility, and network consensus would all become part of the process.
BitGo CEO Rejects the Framing
The warning has not gone unchallenged. BitGo CEO Mike Belshe criticized Project Eleven’s position, suggesting that the firm’s business model relies on amplifying public fear around quantum computing. His comments indicate skepticism toward framing the threat as urgent, and imply that some of the messaging may be commercially motivated.
The exchange highlights a wider divide in the crypto industry. One camp believes preparation must begin early because cryptographic migrations take years. The other argues that the sector should remain grounded in current realities and avoid overstating near-term danger before quantum capabilities are proven to be materially disruptive.
A Debate Likely to Intensify
Regardless of the disagreement, quantum risk is becoming a more visible topic in the Bitcoin ecosystem. Questions around wallet exposure, custody resilience, and how a decentralized network could coordinate a large-scale cryptographic shift are moving closer to the center of industry debate. In the coming years, discussion is likely to focus on two issues: when quantum threats become practical, and how Bitcoin could respond without destabilizing the network.
