Proof of Play, the Web3 game developer, said on Aug. 5 that it is ceasing operations, according to BlockBeats. The team said its founding belief was that blockchain games could push forward a new generation of the decentralized internet. That goal, the team acknowledged, was not borne out at a scale that could be validated. The studio also failed to build a sustainable business.

As part of the shutdown, Proof of Play will open-source as much source code and art as possible. That includes the Pirate Nation Unity application and Pirate Nation smart contracts. Founder Pirates NFTs, Pirate Nation artwork, related intellectual property and branding have also been released under a CC0 license.

The Pirate Nation Foundation is independent of Proof of Play. It will continue to support the PIRATE token, and its website will keep running. Proof of Play points, by contrast, will not be redeemable for anything.

Shiba Story Go!, another property tied to the studio, has been acquired by a third party and will operate independently.

Proof of Play previously raised a $33 million seed round in September 2023. A16z and Greenoaks co-led that round, according to earlier reporting.
