Proton, the company behind the privacy-focused Proton Mail with over 100 million users, has unveiled Proton Wallet, a new self-custodial Bitcoin wallet. Founder and CEO Andy Yen announced the launch on Wednesday via Proton's blog, emphasizing that the wallet aims to make Bitcoin transactions as easy as sending an email while maintaining robust security and user control.

Self-Custody and End-to-End Encryption: Full User Control

Proton Wallet is designed as a non-custodial wallet, meaning users retain exclusive ownership of their Bitcoin. “Proton Wallet is not just another self-custody Bitcoin wallet — it has a number of features that we believe make it the easiest way to introduce Bitcoin safely to newcomers,” Yen stated. The wallet utilizes end-to-end encryption to ensure that Proton never has access to users' Bitcoin, even during transactions. “Unlike Bitcoin exchanges, Proton never pools your Bitcoin with the coins of other users in a centralized place where they could be accessible to a hacker,” he added. Each wallet generates a recovery seed phrase known only to the user; even if Proton were to disappear someday, users could recover their Bitcoin with that phrase.

Email Address as Bitcoin Address: Reducing Friction

A key innovation is the ability to send Bitcoin using only a recipient's email address, provided both parties have Proton Wallet. “By leveraging Proton’s existing encryption key management infrastructure that powers the end-to-end encrypted services that we use to support over 100 million accounts today, sending and receiving Bitcoin is now as easy as sending and receiving email,” Yen explained. This means that any of the millions of Proton Mail users can automatically receive Bitcoin via their email address, without needing to create a separate wallet.

Swiss Regulatory Framework and Future Plans

Proton Wallet is operated by Proton Financial AG, a Swiss subsidiary of Proton AG and primarily owned by the nonprofit Proton Foundation. Yen noted that the wallet aims to bring Bitcoin “out of the domain of the tech-savvy and into the hands of anybody who wants to access the financial freedom it enables.” While adding fiat currency capabilities is a potential future development, it would require a Swiss banking license, which is not currently feasible.

Proton Wallet is now available globally on iOS, Android, and web. The launch expands Proton's privacy-focused ecosystem and is seen as a significant step toward mainstream Bitcoin adoption.
