A Kremlin aide said early on Oct. 10 local time that Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. leader Donald Trump that talks with Ukraine cannot be resumed at this stage. According to presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Putin used the call to describe Russia’s response to what he called terrorist attacks carried out by the Ukrainian armed forces. Putin also said Ukraine had tried to disrupt elections to the State Duma and had carried out attacks against civilians, which he said had undermined the possibility of an immediate return to negotiations. Ushakov added that Putin told Trump Ukraine’s effort to halt Russian military advances had no prospect of success, and that Russian forces currently held the initiative on the battlefield and were continuing to move forward. He also said Trump had instructed that Putin’s message be passed on to the Ukrainian delegation. Ushakov said the two sides did not hold specific discussions on a bilateral meeting between Putin and Trump. The report was cited by CCTV News.
Odaily reported that Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov outlined a call between the Russian and U.S. leaders in the early hours of Oct. 10 local time.
According to Ushakov, Vladimir Putin said during the call that Russia had taken measures in response to what he described as terrorist attacks carried out by the Ukrainian armed forces. Putin said Ukraine had attempted to disrupt elections to Russia’s State Duma and had carried out attacks against civilians, which he said had damaged the possibility of an immediate resumption of negotiations.
Putin also said Ukraine’s attempt to stop Russian forces from advancing had no successful prospect. He said Russian troops currently held full initiative on the battlefield and were continuing to move forward.
He said that because of Ukraine’s position, especially what he described as attempts to disrupt the State Duma elections, it was not possible at present to restore talks with Ukraine.
Ushakov added that Trump had instructed that the information conveyed by Putin during the call be relayed to the Ukrainian delegation. On the question of a bilateral meeting between Putin and Trump, Ushakov said the two sides had not yet held specific discussions.
The report cited CCTV News as the source.
