Q-Day, the unknown future point when quantum computers become strong enough to break common encryption, is back in the spotlight. CNN's recent report highlights that the mathematical systems underpinning internet security may eventually collapse under quantum power. Crypto is especially exposed: blockchains rely on public-key cryptography to protect wallets and verify transactions.

The report notes that attackers may already be harvesting encrypted data for “harvest now, decrypt later” strategies, storing it until stronger quantum machines arrive. This means on-chain data today could be vulnerable tomorrow.

Solana Clients Take Early Action with Falcon Signatures

Crypto networks are not waiting. Solana validator clients Anza and Firedancer have integrated early versions of Falcon, a post-quantum signature tool designed for future network protection. The teams state that Falcon can be activated on demand and will not create significant performance overhead. Jump Crypto adds that Falcon-512's smaller signature size, compared to other selected post-quantum standards, helps maintain speed and storage efficiency.

NEAR Raises Ownership Dispute Risks

Near One highlights a different danger: quantum attacks may not only expose private keys but also create disputes over asset ownership. After stolen funds move on-chain, networks may struggle to tell whether a transaction came from the legitimate owner or an attacker. NEAR CTO Anton Astafiev warns, “Networks may not know if a transaction came from the real owner or an attacker.” NEAR plans a testnet rollout using FIPS-204 quantum-safe signatures by the end of Q2 2026.

NIST Pushes for Early Migration

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has already released three post-quantum encryption standards. NIST urges administrators to begin migrating as soon as possible, since current encryption could face quantum attacks at any time. Organizations must identify where weak algorithms are used and plan upgrades. For crypto, this means wallets, validators, exchanges, bridges, and custody firms need long-term migration plans before Q-Day becomes a real network risk.
