Project Eleven, a post-quantum security firm, has warned that quantum computing could pose a real threat to Bitcoin wallet security by 2030. The company emphasized that transitioning Bitcoin to post-quantum cryptography entails significant technical and logistical hurdles, requiring coordinated action from users, exchanges, custodians, and miners. They argue the issue is not merely technical but a governance challenge that demands early preparation.
Project Eleven: Not a False Alarm
In a detailed report, Project Eleven highlighted that quantum computers could potentially break Bitcoin's Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) once they achieve sufficient qubits. Addresses that have exposed public keys—such as those used in transactions—would be vulnerable to theft. The firm urged the industry to act now, warning that failing to do so could lead to “irreversible loss of billions of dollars in assets.”
BitGo CEO: Classic Fear-Mongering
Mike Belshe, CEO of BitGo, strongly criticized the warning. He argued that Project Eleven's business model relies on stoking public fear about quantum computing. While Belshe acknowledged quantum computing as a long-term concern, he called the 2030 deadline “greatly exaggerated.” “We have seen similar panic cycles for years, each time resolved by new technological advances,” he said. Belshe noted that the Bitcoin community is already exploring post-quantum signature schemes (e.g., Taproot upgrades) and that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Industry Divide: How Urgent Is the Quantum Threat?
This is not the first debate over quantum computing's impact on crypto. Previously, Citibank warned that quantum computing could undermine Bitcoin security within a decade; analytics firm Glassnode estimated that around 6.04 million BTC (roughly one-third of total supply) might be at risk due to exposed public keys. However, many technical experts believe that a practical quantum computer capable of breaking current cryptography is at least 15–20 years away, and that Bitcoin can be upgraded via hard forks or soft forks.
Project Eleven's warning and Belshe's rebuttal have reignited discussions in the crypto community. Developers are closely monitoring NIST's post-quantum cryptography standardization, with proposals like BIP-340 already leaving room for future upgrades.
Bitcoin's price has remained largely unaffected by this controversy, with market sentiment staying calm. Investors are advised to keep an eye on quantum progress but not make panic decisions based on a single firm's predictions.
