Ramp has launched a new "Finance for the Agent Economy" page and is opening its corporate card, expense management, bill pay, banking, travel, and AI spend tools to AI agents. The company says businesses can assign each agent an identity, budget, permissions, and payment method. Its new Agent Cards are designed to let agents complete payments within strict limits, while an MCP server gives tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, and Perplexity access to Ramp data and workflows. Ramp also offers an open-source CLI for coding agents, with sandbox mode enabled by default and production access tied to OAuth-authenticated users.

Ramp is giving AI agents access to company money, but with guardrails

As AI agents move from answering questions to carrying out work for companies, a new problem shows up fast: if an agent needs to book a flight, buy software, or pay a vendor, how does it spend corporate money safely and legally? Ramp, the enterprise fintech company, says it wants to help answer that question.

The company has launched a new "Finance for the Agent Economy" page and is opening up its existing corporate card, expense management, bill pay, banking, travel, and AI spend management tools to AI agents. The pitch is simple: businesses can give each agent an identity, a budget, permissions, and a payment method.

Ramp describes the system as "Finance for companies that run on agents". Until now, most enterprise AI agents have handled research, customer support, coding, and data cleanup. Once an agent starts handling procurement, travel, software subscriptions, or financial workflows, it runs into the core corporate permission layer: money.

Four layers of controls for each agent

Ramp says it has built a four-layer control model for agents. Each agent has a persistent identity and a human manager. Companies can pre-set budgets, approval thresholds, and approved merchants. They can also restrict which payment tools and funding sources an agent may use. Every payment and accounting sync action leaves an audit trail.

In other words, Ramp is not simply handing a company card number to AI. It is trying to build something closer to financial permission management for an AI employee.

For example, a company could create an agent responsible for office purchasing, give it a weekly budget of $10,000, allow it to pay only certain vendors, require human approval for any transaction above $500, and insist that every purchase include a receipt. The agent can operate within those limits, but it cannot move outside the financial boundaries set by the company.

Agent Cards issue one-time payment credentials

The flagship product here is Agent Cards. According to Ramp’s documentation, Agent Cards can generate a fresh set of single-use card numbers, CVV codes, and other payment credentials at the moment an AI is ready to complete a transaction. The card can be restricted to specific merchants and a maximum spending amount.

After the first authorization, the card expires. If it is never used, it lasts no longer than 12 hours.

Ramp also gives an example workflow for an agent buying a domain or hosting service. The AI can use browser tools to visit sites such as Cloudflare and Namecheap, search for the product, complete checkout, then request an Agent Card that matches the budget and enter the payment details. Once the transaction is done, the agent can continue handling the receipt, memo, and accounting classification.

That means a request like "buy laptops for two new employees" could become more than a product recommendation. The agent could compare prices, pick a vendor, request payment authorization, receive a limited-purpose credential, and finish the purchase on its own.

Ramp is also betting on MCP as an entry point

Ramp is also using MCP, or Model Context Protocol, as one of its main entry points. Its documentation says the Ramp MCP Server lets MCP-enabled AI systems such as ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, and Perplexity call Ramp tools directly. In chat, they can query transactions, corporate cards, funds, vendors, departments, accounting categories, and cash balances. They can also answer questions about expense policies, spending limits, and why a transaction was declined.

Ramp says its current Agent Tools snapshot includes 147 tools, although actual access still depends on the user’s identity, company management settings, OAuth scope, and client environment.

For coding agents, Ramp also offers an open-source CLI. That lets agents operate Ramp from the terminal using structured data, which is suitable for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor CLI, automation scripts, or CI environments.

Ramp says the CLI connects to Sandbox by default. Developers confirm the workflow first and only then switch to production, and every action is still tied to the Ramp user who completed OAuth authentication.
