According to TechFlow on June 14, Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio recently published a long-form essay outlining his views on investment decision-making in the age of artificial intelligence. Dalio emphasized that although new generations of AI technology are changing how information is processed and how decisions can be supported, human insight still has an irreplaceable role in financial markets.

Why widely known information loses investment value

Dalio described investing as a competitive environment that is close to zero-sum in terms of added value. In his view, once a piece of information becomes widely recognized, its investment value tends to decline quickly. For that reason, even the most advanced AI systems are not enough for investors to rely on completely or follow blindly. The durable source of competitive advantage, he argued, remains distinctive human understanding and deep insight into markets and how the real world operates.

Drawing on Bridgewater’s development over the past 50 years, Dalio said decision-making should be built on a system of principles that is logically clear, understandable and testable. He explained that principled thinking is not simply intuition or experience-based judgment. Instead, it involves systematizing decision standards, analyzing situations and causal relationships, recording core principles, testing them with historical data as much as possible, and eventually turning them into a computable and automatically executable decision system.

A cooperative game between humans and AI

Dalio also noted that principles cannot be formed purely through data mining, nor by directly asking AI for answers. They need to be grounded in logical reasoning and an understanding of the laws that govern the real world. He described this process as a “cooperative game” between humans and AI: AI provides systematic recommendations based on established principles, while humans think independently according to their own principle framework. Through comparison, discussion and logical verification, both sides help refine the decision-making system.

In Dalio’s view, genuinely valuable principles should be able to cross time and geography, and should withstand testing across different historical cycles and market environments. If a principle fails, the causal relationships behind it must be studied again and revised continuously. Dalio said he has already applied this approach in his family office in order to make full use of new-generation AI technology, and he plans to keep sharing the related methodology with the outside world. He also reminded market participants that as AI technology continues to develop, the ability to combine artificial intelligence effectively with principled thinking will become an important dividing line for future competitiveness.
