LinkedIn co-founder and Greylock partner Reid Hoffman predicted at CoinDesk's Consensus Miami that NFTs are headed for a “rebirth”, driven by the surge of AI agents. As agents begin to outnumber humans online, he argued, digital identity systems must be rebuilt — and crypto offers the clearest path.
Why agent-to-agent commerce needs a new identity layer
Hoffman explained that his renewed interest in NFTs came from imagining a world with more AI agents than people. “When your agent talks to my agent and we book this talk, is it a trustable transaction?” he said. NFTs were originally designed to solve uniqueness and ownership verification on digital networks — exactly what autonomous agent transactions now require. Internal corporate identity systems are easy, but the real challenge is “free range” identity on the open internet. Crypto, he said, “is the obvious answer.”
From LinkedIn to AI clones: the same identity thread
The argument echoes Hoffman's core thesis at LinkedIn: real-world professional identity creates “more responsibility, more reliability.” He acknowledged pseudonyms have legitimate uses. Citing his own AI clone “Reid AI” — which he has sent to speak at conferences — he stressed that as generative media improves, provenance becomes critical.
“I’ve never sold my bitcoin”
Hoffman disclosed he bought his first bitcoin in 2014 and has never sold a single coin. Back then he saw crypto as how DNS and identity should work on the internet. When asked for an exit price, he replied: “Is there such a thing as an exit price?”
Political balance: don’t over-commit to one party
He cautioned the crypto industry against swinging too hard toward Republicans in reaction to former SEC Chair Gary Gensler. “The pendulum swings,” he said. “It’s good to be bipartisan from a viewpoint of what we care about is the ecosystem.”
AI layoffs are a reshuffling, not automation
Contrary to the narrative that AI drives Big Tech job cuts, Hoffman argued most companies (except Meta) use AI as a cover for post-pandemic hiring corrections. “We overhired because of the pandemic. We need to change. We’re going to call it AI for a position of strength.”
Investing in recycled crypto ideas: NFTs and DAOs
As an investor, Hoffman is hunting for crypto concepts that were tried too early in prior cycles but may return as AI transforms the internet. NFTs top the list, and “DAOs and other areas” could also see renewed relevance. The thread is consistent: a decentralized economy of AI agents needs decentralized identity and governance.
