Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Renzo has announced the completion of a $3.2 million seed round led by prominent crypto fund Maven11, with participation from Figment Capital, SevenX, IOSG, and Paper Ventures, among others. The funding will accelerate development of Renzo's liquid restaking protocol built on EigenLayer, which went live in late December 2023.

Rising Interest in Liquid Restaking

Liquid restaking on EigenLayer has seen surging demand in recent months. Since its launch, Renzo has attracted over 2,000 users who have deposited $20 million worth of ETH (approximately 9,000 ETH) into the protocol. This new mechanism allows users to simultaneously participate in Ethereum staking and EigenLayer's Actively Validated Services (AVS), earning compounding rewards across both layers.

How Renzo Works: The ezETH Token

Renzo combines smart contracts and operator nodes to deliver automated liquid restaking strategies on EigenLayer. Users can deposit ETH or Liquid Staking Tokens (LSTs) into the platform's smart contracts to mint ezETH, an ERC20 token representing a restaked ETH position. This fully-backed token can be used throughout the DeFi ecosystem as collateral, generating rewards in ETH, USDC, and AVS tokens — similar to cbETH or rETH.

The automated strategies handle operator selection and risk adjustment, eliminating the complexity of manually managing restaking positions. Renzo also removes the typical unstaking cooldown period, making it easier for users to enter and exit positions. Governance is managed through a DAO that oversees operator choices, AVS restaking strategies, and protocol parameters, supporting decentralization.

Investor Perspectives

Lucas Kozinski, Founding Contributor at Renzo, commented: "We are delighted to welcome such a distinguished group of investors who share our vision of making restaking accessible to everyone. With their support, we will make Renzo the most reliable on/off ramp for Ethereum restaking, building upon the new capabilities offered by EigenLayer."

Balder Bomans, Founder and Managing Partner at Maven11, added: "Renzo's focus on security, risk mitigation, and open finance is the best way to tackle a liquid and decentralized governance procedure for picking AVS on EigenLayer. Renzo delivers risk-adjusted strategies and liquid representations while providing security to restakers."

Danish Chaudhry, Founding Partner at Paper Ventures, stated: "Although restaking has grown in popularity, many pain points remain that dissuade people from participating. Renzo addresses these head-on, abstracting the complexities of choosing and managing node operators and eliminating the usual unstaking cooldown period. We couldn't be happier to support the platform as it enhances the restaking ecosystem for DeFi users worldwide."

Future Roadmap

Renzo plans to introduce cross-chain restaking support in future releases, integrate with lending markets and liquidity aggregators, and launch vault products tailored for institutional on/off ramps. These developments aim to expand the utility of ezETH and solidify Renzo's position as a leading liquid restaking platform.

With EigenLayer's mainnet live and an increasing number of AVS services being launched, liquid restaking is poised to become a major growth sector in the Ethereum ecosystem. Renzo's automated strategies and strong investor backing position it well to capture this emerging opportunity.
