Ripple CTO David Schwartz said that even as XRPL expands into stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, and lending, XRP still holds a uniquely privileged position in the ledger through fee payments, no-counterparty design, and liquidity routing advantages.

Ripple Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz has clarified why XRP continues to occupy a unique position within the XRP Ledger (XRPL), even as the network broadens beyond its native token. Responding to concerns that XRPL’s growing ecosystem could dilute XRP’s importance, Schwartz said the ledger is designed to support much more than a single asset, including stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, and various forms of lending.

XRP Keeps a Structural Advantage on XRPL

While acknowledging that a functional decentralized exchange cannot operate around only one asset, Schwartz argued that XRP still holds a structurally privileged role inside the protocol. According to him, XRP is the only asset any account can receive and the only one without a counterparty. That distinction gives it a foundational status compared with issued assets that depend on an external issuer or credit relationship.

He also noted that XRPL’s pathfinding engine checks XRP liquidity first, while the ledger’s autobridging mechanism makes offers involving XRP more likely to be executed. These protocol-level features strengthen XRP’s usefulness as a bridge asset for decentralized trading, payments, and value routing across the network.

Fees, Settlement, and the Value Question

Another major point raised by Schwartz is that XRP is the only asset that can be used to pay transaction fees on XRPL. That gives the token a core operational role that other assets on the ledger do not share, reinforcing its place at the center of network activity.

At the same time, Schwartz was cautious about drawing a straight line between XRPL’s growth and XRP’s market valuation. He said it remains difficult to determine how much value the ledger can generate and how much of that value ultimately accrues to XRP. Even so, supporters argue that as XRPL adds more financial use cases, XRP’s role in settlement, liquidity access, and transaction flow could remain a critical source of relevance.
