Ripple chief technology officer David Schwartz said Bitcoin may eventually need a quantum-resistant fork, warning that the network could face severe long-term danger — or even collapse — if advances in quantum computing weaken the cryptographic protections it relies on today. His remarks have revived debate over whether Bitcoin can preserve its security model without a major protocol change.

In a recent online discussion, Schwartz argued that Bitcoin’s long-run success has depended more on reputation and market trust than on steady technical upgrades at the blockchain layer. In his view, Bitcoin’s core job is straightforward: users need to be able to hold and transfer the asset reliably over time. That function, he said, does not require technology beyond what is already available across public blockchains.

Schwartz says a post-quantum fork could become necessary

Schwartz said Bitcoin would likely “need a fork to be quantum proof.” He framed that as a future requirement that could emerge if quantum computing develops to the point where current cryptographic defenses are no longer strong enough. Without that kind of upgrade, he suggested, Bitcoin could face serious long-term security risks.

His comments were not presented as a claim that Bitcoin is under immediate quantum attack. The point was narrower, and still significant: if computing power changes the assumptions behind modern cryptography, Bitcoin’s traditionally cautious approach to upgrades may come under pressure. The issue is less about short-term market action and more about whether the protocol can adapt to a new security environment.

Bitcoin’s appeal, in his view, does not depend on added features

Schwartz also argued that Bitcoin does not draw most of its value from continually adding new blockchain features. As he put it, “For 99% of what makes bitcoin interesting,” the chain only needs to let people rely on being able to hold and transfer bitcoin in the future. He said that capability is not unique to Bitcoin and does not require unavailable technology.

That view suggests incremental technical improvements alone may not materially shape Bitcoin’s long-term adoption or price behavior. Its market position, in this framing, rests more heavily on trust, recognition, and network effects. Technology still matters. It just is not the main source of Bitcoin’s standing in every cycle.

Post-quantum cryptography is back in focus

Schwartz’s remarks came as researchers and blockchain developers have been discussing post-quantum cryptography with greater urgency. These systems are designed to resist attacks from future quantum computers. The threat is still widely seen as distant, but the conversation raises a practical question: if that risk becomes more concrete, could Bitcoin coordinate a global upgrade without breaking its own conservative governance culture?

For now, the comments function more as a reminder than an immediate warning. Even the most established digital assets may eventually run into technical turning points driven by advances that originate outside the crypto sector.
