A fresh debate around XRP Ledger's decentralization erupted after Bitcoin advocate Bram Kanstein pointed out that the ledger began at block 32,570, not block 1, due to a technical glitch. Kanstein argued this proves XRP was built as a fundamentally centralized system.
Ripple CTO David Schwartz pushed back hard. He explained that handling the genesis bug without altering any data was a textbook example of decentralized inaction. Schwartz then compared it to two defining moments in Bitcoin's history: the 2010 rollback and the value overflow bug fix. In both cases, he argued, a small group of stakeholders coordinated to steer the outcome — a clear sign of centralization.
What Decentralization Really Means
Schwartz believes Bitcoin's track record shows vulnerability to human intervention, whereas XRP's decision to live with the glitch without corrective measures demonstrates decentralized resilience. Kanstein, however, continues to use the glitch as evidence of centralized control. The clash highlights a fundamental tension in crypto: decentralization is not a binary label. Both networks faced moments that tested their core principles, but how they responded tells different stories about their underlying philosophies.
Ripple Expands Real-World Assets: Diamonds Tokenized on XRPL
Beyond the debate, Ripple is pushing real-world asset tokenization. Reece Merrick, Ripple's Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, announced the company is backing Billiton Diamond and Ctrl Alt Co. to tokenize over AED 1 billion ($280 million) worth of certified polished diamonds on the XRP Ledger. Using Ripple's enterprise-grade custody solution, the project aims to bring more transparency and efficiency to commodities markets, bridging traditional assets with the digital economy.
