Reece Merrick, Senior Executive Officer and Managing Director for Middle East and Africa at Ripple, shared on social media platform X on Dec. 5 that the XRP Ledger (XRPL) is built for scaled financial activity. His remarks highlighted its role in real-world settlement flows and its capacity to support tokenized instruments.
XRPL Positioning for Scaled Tokenized Finance
Merrick stated: “The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is designed for high-volume, real-world utility settlement, with proven scalability for tokenized assets and payments. It’s not just a ledger; it’s infrastructure for moving value and tokenized financial products.” He stressed that XRPL is engineered for institutional-grade throughput, a critical point for firms assessing execution speed, cost efficiencies, and settlement assurance.
The XRP Ledger is experiencing significant growth beyond its core cross-border payment use case. Institutional adoption is surging, notably with the tokenization of Real-World Assets (RWAs) like U.S. Treasuries, which have grown substantially on the ledger. Key developments include the launch of the XRPL EVM Sidechain, enabling smart contract compatibility and attracting a broader range of developers and decentralized finance (DeFi) projects. The user base is expanding, evidenced by millions of active wallets. With new infrastructure upgrades and the growth of Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin, the XRPL is cementing its role as a versatile, high-speed, and low-cost platform for global finance and diverse Web3 applications.
Institutional Adoption and RWA Tokenization Boom
Merrick’s remarks come at a time of accelerating expansion for the XRPL ecosystem. In 2025, institutional demand for tokenized Treasuries, funds, and commodities surged. XRPL, with its sub-second finality (3-5 seconds), low fees, and native decentralized exchange (DEX), has become a preferred ledger for these assets. The XRPL’s Automated Market Maker (AMM) functionality and upcoming cross-chain bridges further enhance liquidity appeal.
Ripple is also actively hiring software engineers to advance XRPL scalability and performance, signaling a commitment to positioning XRPL as a bridging network between traditional finance and decentralized finance.
Outlook and Analyst Perspectives
Analysts evaluating XRPL’s scalability and finality focus on its ability to maintain low fees, resilience, and deterministic settlement during periods of heavy network activity. Supporters argue that XRPL’s speed, transparency, and interoperability can enhance liquidity and streamline institutional workflows. With RLUSD native issuance on XRPL and increasing participation from banks and fintechs in tokenized deposit trials, XRPL’s image as a “settlement-focused blockchain” is becoming clearer.
Future plans include native oracles, enhanced multi-party computation (MPC) support, and zero-knowledge proof-based privacy features, which are expected to further attract traditional financial institutions. Merrick’s public endorsement serves as a strong rebuttal to market skepticism regarding XRPL’s capacity to support large-scale tokenized finance.
