Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin is no longer just a digital token for crypto trading. It is now being tested in a real trade finance workflow under Singapore's Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) BLOOM framework, in partnership with supply chain finance firm Unloq.
How RLUSD Works Inside BLOOM
On March 25, Ripple announced its participation in MAS's BLOOM initiative, which aims to expand settlement capabilities for tokenized bank liabilities and regulated stablecoins. RLUSD is used as the payment leg, integrated with Unloq's SC+ platform. The platform combines trade obligations, settlement rules, and financing workflows in one execution layer, while RLUSD handles payments on the XRP Ledger.
Once pre-set conditions, such as shipment confirmation, are verified, funds are transferred automatically. This eliminates manual reviews and correspondent banking delays, cutting settlement from days to minutes.
Trade Finance Pain Points and RLUSD's Solution
Traditional trade finance relies heavily on paper documents, manual checks, and multi-tier correspondent banking. A cross-border payment can take three to five days. The RLUSD pilot aims to replace manual work with automation and multi-tier banking with on-chain settlement.
Ripple says the setup improves transparency, reduces costs, and accelerates cross-border trade settlement. For small and medium enterprises, clearer payment conditions could also improve access to financing.
Regulatory Backdrop and Market Signal
Singapore provides a regulated sandbox via BLOOM. RLUSD itself is a compliant stablecoin: pegged 1:1 to the USD, with reserves in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term U.S. government instruments held in segregated accounts.
The market read is not about price swings—RLUSD is a stablecoin. The real signal is that Ripple is embedding it into a real trade workflow, not just adding another exchange pair or payment corridor. Earlier this month, Ripple expanded Ripple Payments into a full stablecoin platform and announced plans to secure an Australian financial services license.
If the pilot succeeds, it could prove that regulated stablecoins can handle programmable settlement in real commercial activity, especially where speed, compliance, and visibility matter most. No grand promises, just a narrow but practical test—and its outcome may reshape how the finance industry views stablecoin utility.
