Schwartz Challenges the Decentralization Narrative Around PoW
David Schwartz, former CTO of Ripple, has raised fresh concerns about Bitcoin’s decentralization, arguing that its Proof-of-Work (PoW) design may not be as decentralizing in practice as many assume. In his view, PoW can become a centralizing force unless the network actively finds ways to counterbalance that tendency.
The comments came after Foundry USA mined seven consecutive Bitcoin blocks, an event that reignited discussion about mining concentration, pool dominance, and the broader security structure of the Bitcoin network. While a streak of consecutive blocks does not by itself prove manipulation or structural failure, it has again focused attention on how much influence large mining pools may accumulate over time.
Why Mining Concentration Matters
Schwartz pointed to the risks that emerge when too much hash power is clustered in the hands of large miners or mining pools. One of the concerns he highlighted is selfish mining, a strategy in which dominant miners may attempt to gain an advantage by withholding blocks or exploiting timing dynamics within the protocol. Such behavior could distort incentives and raise questions about fairness across the network.
The issue reflects a longstanding debate within Bitcoin. Supporters of PoW argue that the mechanism strengthens security through open competition and economic cost. Critics, however, note that the real-world economics of mining — including access to cheap energy, specialized hardware, and operational scale — may naturally favor large players and gradually reduce effective decentralization.
A Difficult Trade-Off for Bitcoin
Schwartz also suggested that changing Bitcoin’s mining algorithm to reduce concentration would come with serious drawbacks. Altering such a core part of the system could undermine confidence in Bitcoin’s immutability and long-term rule stability, both of which are central to its credibility in the market.
At the same time, leaving the current design untouched could mean relying heavily on miner behavior and market dynamics to keep centralization in check. That creates a difficult trade-off: changing the rules risks damaging trust, while preserving them may leave Bitcoin exposed to structural concentration pressures embedded in PoW itself.

The latest discussion highlights that decentralization is not a fixed condition but an ongoing process that must be defended in practice. Schwartz’s remarks, combined with the Foundry USA block streak, have brought renewed attention to who really holds influence over Bitcoin’s security layer. As mining concentration, incentive design, and governance boundaries remain unresolved topics, this debate is likely to stay central to the Bitcoin ecosystem.
