RippleX Head of Engineering Ayo Akinyele said the crypto industry’s long-standing 2030 target for quantum readiness may no longer be sufficient. In his view, research progress tied to Google’s work on improvements to Shor’s algorithm has shortened the timeline, putting pressure on blockchain networks to prepare sooner. For XRP Ledger, he said, readiness may need to come within the next couple of years rather than at the end of the decade.

In the interview, Akinyele said the standard assumption had been that public blockchain networks could plan their migration to quantum-safe cryptography around 2030. That assumption is now under strain. He said teams cannot simply wait and hope the timetable holds, and should instead prepare contingency plans in case advances in quantum technology move faster than network migrations. His point was blunt: this is not an ordinary upgrade cycle.

Quantum migration would reshape core infrastructure

Akinyele described quantum readiness as something much larger than a software patch. According to him, a transition of this kind would have a sweeping effect on how infrastructure is operated. He also warned that if quantum hardware capable of breaking classical cryptography is ever achieved, the shift may happen quietly. There may be no public signal that the cryptographic assumptions protecting digital assets have already been compromised.

He tied that risk to the current state of software foundations. Referring to bugs still being discovered in Linux kernels after 23 years, Akinyele said this year should be used to examine the cracks in XRPL’s base architecture and strengthen it. The immediate task, as he framed it, is to address the foundation first and then evolve the system with migration in mind.

RippleX has a roadmap and is speaking with developers

RippleX has already published a roadmap that reflects its intent to become quantum ready. The company is also working with development teams building quantum-safe signature schemes for different use cases. Akinyele said several teams have approached RippleX to discuss how their work could fit into XRPL’s migration path.

He also confirmed contact with the Ethereum Foundation, which he said expressed confidence that ETH will be ready. RippleX is now in active discussions with Ripple as well, with the goal of ensuring that the same can be said for XRP Ledger.

Institutional DeFi makes the issue more urgent

The timeline matters more because of where XRP Ledger is headed. RippleX is building infrastructure for institutional DeFi, including token issuance, collateral management, repo transactions, and yield generation, with RLUSD used as a foundational layer.

That direction raises the security bar. Institutions operating on-chain expect reliability, security, and deterministic settlement at a level that consumer applications do not demand to the same extent. In Akinyele’s framing, quantum readiness is not a theoretical concern for XRPL. It is a requirement tied to the institutional use cases the network is being built to support.
