RippleX engineering lead J. Ayo Akinyele said a critical flaw in the XRP Ledger’s payment engine had existed for more than 10 years and could have allowed XRP to be minted beyond its fixed supply. The issue was identified through a bug bounty program after a report from Veria AI, and Akinyele said it had not been exploited. RippleX has released xrpld 3.4.1 to address the vulnerability and coordinated with validators to complete a network upgrade before the issue was publicly disclosed. Akinyele also said AI is speeding up vulnerability discovery, prompting XRPL to increase proactive security spending, reduce technical debt, expand formal verification work, and systematically remove latent risks in older code.

ChainCatcher reported that, in response to a critical payment-engine vulnerability flagged by Veria AI, RippleX engineering lead J. Ayo Akinyele said the XRP Ledger (XRPL) had a severe flaw that had existed for more than 10 years and could have allowed XRP to be minted beyond its fixed supply.

According to Akinyele, the issue was discovered through a bug bounty program and had not been exploited. The development team has released xrpld 3.4.1 as a fix and coordinated with validators to complete a network upgrade before publicly disclosing the vulnerability.

Akinyele added that AI is accelerating the pace of vulnerability discovery. He said XRPL will increase proactive security investment, clean up technical debt, advance formal verification, and systematically eliminate latent risks in legacy code.
