On Wednesday, Robinhood Markets (Nasdaq: HOOD) announced a strategic partnership with Circle, the issuer of the USD Coin (USDC). The collaboration makes USDC the first stablecoin available on Robinhood Crypto and the company's newly launched beta Web3 wallet, Robinhood Wallet. Users can now buy, sell, and transfer USDC directly within these platforms.
Bridging Fiat and Web3
Johann Kerbrat, CTO and GM of Robinhood Crypto, unveiled the partnership at Circle's Converge22 event in San Francisco. “USDC will play a crucial role in helping our customers get their dollars into Web3 through a trusted and transparent source,” Kerbrat said. “It’s a crucial addition to our product to enable our customers to experience Web3 dapps and defi, without exposing themselves to volatility within the market.” Jeremy Allaire, co-founder and CEO of Circle, noted that Robinhood's support “reinforces the role USDC plays in greater payments and commerce use cases.”
Learn and Earn with USDC Rewards
The two companies also plan to launch exclusive in-app educational modules under the “Learn and Earn” program. Robinhood Crypto customers will be able to complete short lessons about stablecoins and USDC to earn USDC rewards directly. According to the blog post, these modules will roll out broadly over the coming months. Meanwhile, the beta version of Robinhood Wallet is currently available to 10,000 waiting-list customers, offering full support for USDC transfers and usage within Web3 applications.
Market Impact and Stablecoin Growth
As of September 28, 2022, USDC is the second-largest stablecoin by market capitalization, standing at approximately $49.11 billion. The partnership with Robinhood is expected to further expand USDC's utility among retail investors and DeFi enthusiasts. Robinhood's integration of USDC follows its recent listing of the stablecoin on its exchange and the launch of its Web3 wallet, signaling the company's deepening commitment to the crypto ecosystem. Circle and Robinhood aim to make stablecoin transactions more seamless and educational, bridging the gap between traditional finance and the decentralized world.
