On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, Robinhood Markets (Nasdaq: HOOD) announced a strategic partnership with Circle Financial to integrate the stablecoin USD Coin (USDC) into its exchange platform Robinhood Crypto and the newly launched Robinhood Wallet (currently in beta). The collaboration was revealed through a blog post on Robinhood's official blog and at Circle's Converge22 event in San Francisco.
USDC Becomes First Stablecoin on Robinhood
According to the announcement, USDC is the first stablecoin available for buying and selling on Robinhood Crypto. It is also supported on the Robinhood Wallet, which was rolled out in beta to 10,000 customers earlier that week. Johann Kerbrat, Chief Technology Officer and General Manager of Robinhood Crypto, stated: “USDC will play a crucial role in helping our customers get their dollars into Web3 through a trusted and transparent source. It’s a crucial addition to our product to enable our customers to experience Web3 dapps and DeFi, without exposing themselves to volatility within the market.”
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire commented: “Robinhood’s support reinforces the role USDC plays in greater payments and commerce use cases.” The partnership marks a significant step for stablecoin adoption in mainstream retail finance.
Learn and Earn: Educational Modules with USDC Rewards
In addition to trading, Robinhood and Circle will launch exclusive in-app educational modules called “Learn and Earn.” Customers can complete short lessons about cryptocurrencies and stablecoins to earn USDC rewards. The modules will be available to all Robinhood Crypto users and will roll out gradually over the coming months.
Market Context
As of September 28, 2022, USDC held a market capitalization of $49.11 billion, making it the second-largest stablecoin globally. The integration into Robinhood's platform is expected to further boost USDC's utility and adoption among retail investors.
The beta launch of Robinhood's non-custodial Web3 wallet earlier in the week signals the company's ambition to expand into decentralized finance (DeFi). By partnering with Circle, Robinhood aims to provide a seamless on-ramp for users to access Web3 applications while maintaining the stability of a fiat-backed stablecoin.
