Robinhood has announced a significant expansion of its cryptocurrency trading services, including a restructured fee schedule, new derivative products, staking availability, and enhanced tax compliance tools. The update comes as the company reported a 129% year-over-year increase in Q3 trading revenue, with crypto revenue soaring over 300% to $268 million.
US Market: Refined Fee Tiers
In the United States, Robinhood increased its fee tiers from three to seven, offering high-frequency traders a minimum fee of 0.03%. The new structure aims to attract active traders and market makers, significantly lowering costs from the previous range of 0.1%–0.3%. The company stated the change responds to user demand and is expected to boost liquidity on the platform.
Europe: Perpetual Contracts with Leverage
For eligible European users, Robinhood now offers perpetual contract trading pairs for XRP, SOL (Solana), DOGE (Dogecoin), and SUI, with leverage up to 7x. Perpetual contracts are among the most popular crypto derivatives, allowing traders to speculate on price movements without expiry dates. Robinhood emphasizes that all products comply with local regulations and include risk management safeguards.
Staking Goes Live in New York
New York users can now stake ETH and SOL directly on Robinhood, marking a key regulatory milestone given New York’s strict financial oversight. Staking rewards are automatically distributed, with typical annual yields around 3%–5% for ETH and 6%–8% for SOL, though exact rates were not disclosed. The feature was previously limited to other US states.
Tax Compliance Tool Coming in December
Starting December 22, US users will be able to manually add cost basis information for their crypto deposits, enabling more accurate capital gains calculations. Previously, Robinhood used the default FIFO (first-in, first-out) method. The new tool allows users to select specific lots when selling, optimizing tax outcomes. This move aligns with IRS requirements and may attract compliance-conscious investors.
Growth Drivers
Robinhood attributes its crypto revenue surge to increased user trust following recent security incidents at competing exchanges. As a publicly traded US company (NASDAQ: HOOD), Robinhood offers SIPC insurance for equities and robust cold-storage protection for crypto. The platform continues to lower barriers through a simplified interface and fractional trading, driving new user adoption across all segments.
