Leading investment firm ARK Invest released a report revealing that Robinhood (HOOD)'s growth engine is its $5/month Robinhood Gold subscription, not its traditional trading business. Analyst Nick Grous noted that despite a decline in Q1 trading revenue, Gold has become the ecosystem's backbone, pushing Robinhood toward a 'financial super app'.
Gold Subscription: The New Growth Engine
Data shows that in Q1 2026, Gold penetration among depositing users reached 15.8%, with nearly 40% of new users choosing to upgrade immediately. Gold users hold assets roughly 5x larger than regular users and are significantly more likely to open retirement accounts. This high-stickiness, high-value user base is the key to Robinhood's profit growth.
Banking and Gold Card Boom
The launch of Robinhood Banking further accelerated growth. Deposit balances surged from $100 million to $1.6 billion in just two quarters. Meanwhile, the number of Gold Card holders quadrupled in one year to 765,000. These financial products create strong network effects.
Flywheel Effect Emerges, Trading Takes a Back Seat
ARK believes Gold not only provides stable revenue but also bundles banking, credit cards, portfolio management, retirement accounts, and more to create a 'flywheel': better services attract more users → more users bring more deposits and spending data → data fuels product optimization → attracts more users. This cycle is still in its early stages. Notably, Robinhood's traditional zero-commission trading model is gradually being replaced by a subscription ecosystem, signaling a new direction for fintech profitability.
While Robinhood still has influence in crypto trading (e.g., Bitcoin, Dogecoin), ARK points out that the company's valuation driver is no longer trading volume volatility but subscription user growth and retention. For investors, Gold user penetration, deposit balances, and credit card issuance are now more important metrics than trading revenue.
