Robinhood, the popular U.S. trading platform, has officially entered the crypto staking market with its first-ever staking product, exclusively available to customers in Europe. Starting Wednesday, users can stake their Solana (SOL) holdings directly through the Robinhood Crypto app, earning rewards while retaining the flexibility to unstake at any time. The move marks a strategic expansion from pure trading into yield-generating services, as the company seeks to capitalize on Europe's more regulatory-friendly environment.

Robinhood's First Staking Product

In its announcement, Robinhood stated: “Starting today, we’re introducing our first-ever crypto staking product, which will be available exclusively to our customers in Europe.” Users simply select Solana within the app and enable staking to receive dynamic rewards based on the amount staked. Unlike many staking services that impose lock-up periods, Robinhood allows immediate unstaking without penalties, significantly lowering the barrier to entry. The platform already supports trading of over 30 cryptocurrencies and provides real-time price charts for strategy refinement. The addition of staking rounds out its ecosystem, offering a passive income stream to users.

New User Incentives and Localization

To attract new customers, Robinhood is offering a limited-time bonus: from Wednesday, new users will receive a 10% USDC bonus on their net purchases within the first 30 days on the platform. The bonus is paid in the dollar-pegged stablecoin USDC, aiming to lower the investment hurdle and enhance the overall experience. Simultaneously, the Robinhood Crypto app is rolling out localized versions, starting with users in Italy, Poland, and Lithuania. These customers will enjoy a fully translated experience, including research materials and order placement, boosting confidence and comfort when trading.

Johann Kerbrat, Vice President and General Manager of Robinhood Crypto, commented: “Since launching at the end of last year, our customers in Europe have made it clear they want an app that supports local languages and offers products to earn passive income. We’re excited to deliver both.” He added that the European team is testing additional features, with potential expansion to more asset classes and markets in the future.

Regulatory Challenges in the U.S.

Robinhood’s staking expansion stands in sharp contrast to the regulatory headwinds it faces at home. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has long treated crypto staking as an unregistered securities offering and has taken enforcement actions against multiple exchanges. In February 2023, the SEC charged Kraken, resulting in a $30 million settlement and the termination of Kraken’s U.S. staking services. Earlier this year, Robinhood Markets itself received a Wells notice from the SEC, signaling potential litigation over its crypto operations. The company has stated it will vigorously defend itself if necessary.

Given this backdrop, Robinhood’s decision to launch staking in Europe first allows it to sidestep U.S. legal risks while gaining a foothold in the world’s second-largest crypto market. The European Union’s upcoming Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation provides a clear legal framework for staking and similar services, making the region an attractive testing ground. Analysts view the move as a dual strategy: retaining existing customers through staking and rewards, and expanding into new markets via localization. If the European pilot succeeds, the product could eventually roll out to other compliant jurisdictions. However, U.S. users will remain excluded for the foreseeable future, underscoring the deep impact of global regulatory fragmentation on major industry players.

In summary, Robinhood’s first staking product is not only a product milestone but also a testament to the crypto industry’s ability to adapt amid regulatory divergence. For European crypto users, a more convenient and profitable trading era has begun.
