Update Brings Direct Hardware Wallet Connectivity
Samsung Electronics has released a firmware update for its Galaxy smartphone lineup, enabling users to directly connect Ledger Nano S and Ledger Nano X hardware wallets to the native Samsung Blockchain Wallet. This integration allows users to import cryptocurrencies stored on cold storage devices directly into the mobile app, facilitating transactions without requiring a desktop computer or additional hardware.
In a press release, Samsung emphasized: “The update makes it easier for blockchain users to access and process transactions by importing virtual assets stored on select cold hardware wallets to the Samsung Blockchain Wallet.” The feature is available on Galaxy devices running Android 9.0 or higher, though compatibility may vary by model and market. Samsung also noted that Bluetooth functionality of the Ledger Nano X may be limited when paired with the Samsung wallet.
Evolution and Security of Samsung Blockchain Wallet
The Samsung Blockchain Keystore debuted with the Galaxy S10 series in 2019, initially available only in South Korea, the UK, and the US. It did not support Bitcoin (BTC) at launch but later added support for multiple cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), ERC tokens, Tron (TRX), and TRC tokens. The app also allows users to explore decentralized applications (DApps) that use blockchain technology to authenticate digital asset transfers.
Security remains a key focus: private keys are encrypted and stored in a hardware-isolated area separate from the main operating system and all other apps. Access is granted only after PIN or fingerprint verification, protected by Samsung’s Knox security solution. Users can locate the Keystore under Settings > Biometrics and Security, then choose to create a new wallet or import an existing one.
Industry Impact: Smartphone-Crypto Convergence Advances
Samsung was among the first smartphone manufacturers to integrate cryptocurrency support into mobile devices. By adding hardware wallet connectivity, the company lowers the barrier for mainstream users to adopt cold storage solutions without sacrificing convenience. For crypto holders, this means they can manage assets securely on the go—balancing security and portability more effectively than before.
