SAP has announced a strategic investment in open-source workflow automation platform n8n, alongside a multi-year commercial agreement that ties the two companies closely together. The deal lifts n8n's valuation to $5.2 billion, up from $2.5 billion less than a year ago. The key part of the announcement is not just the funding: SAP plans to embed n8n's technology natively into Joule Studio, its environment for building AI agents.
n8n to become part of Joule Studio
According to the disclosed details, n8n will be integrated into Joule Studio, which sits within the SAP Business AI Platform. Through that integration, n8n's automation and AI orchestration capabilities will expand the agentic functions of Joule and Joule Studio. SAP's enterprise customers are expected to use the setup to connect complex business processes faster and build multi-agent workflows where software agents can coordinate tasks across systems.
Why SAP chose n8n
n8n's appeal in the enterprise market comes from a set of features that fit large organizations. The platform supports integrations with more than 1,000 applications, including SAP systems, which makes it useful for linking fragmented tools and data flows. It also supports no-code, low-code, and pro-code development styles, letting business users and engineering teams work on the same automation stack. Another major factor is self-hosting. In environments shaped by GDPR and strict privacy rules, that option gives companies more control over compliance and data sovereignty.
A notable European software tie-up
The transaction also carries weight beyond product integration. SAP and n8n both originated in Germany, and the partnership is being viewed as an important example of cooperation inside Europe's technology and open-source ecosystem. n8n already has 1.7 million monthly active developers, according to the source material. With SAP's strategic backing and access to its global enterprise customer base, n8n could deepen its reach into traditional corporate IT environments, while SAP customers may get a shorter path to cross-system AI automation.
