Throughout 2025, social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has been flooded with posts claiming that a simple sequence of 24 words can unlock Satoshi Nakamoto's estimated 1.1 million Bitcoin holdings, valued at approximately $111 billion as of November 12, 2025 (when Bitcoin traded around $101,702). One viral post on November 10, 2025 stated: "Fun fact: 24 words in the right order can unlock 111 billion. That fact should scare you." However, cryptocurrency experts unanimously label this as misinformation.
The BIP39 Timeline Disconnect
Alex Thorn, Head of Research at Galaxy Digital, directly refuted the claim on X: "Fake news, dumb slop." He explained: "Satoshi's coins are spread across many pay-to-public-key (P2PK) addresses — i.e., many public-private key pairs, not one. But even worse: hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallets (BIP-32) and mnemonic seed phrases (BIP-39) weren't invented until 2012/2013."
Nakamoto mined Bitcoin from January 2009 through 2010 and was last publicly active on December 12, 2010. BIP39 was proposed on September 10, 2013, years after Nakamoto's disappearance. This standard introduced 12- or 24-word mnemonics derived from a 2,048-word list to represent cryptographic private keys. In contrast, early Bitcoin software used by Nakamoto generated raw 256-bit private keys stored directly in wallet files — no mnemonic conversion existed. Even if someone possessed a hypothetical 24-word seed phrase, it would be completely incompatible with the raw key structure used in Nakamoto's era.
The Mathematical Impossibility of Brute-Force
Even if Satoshi's keys conformed to modern standards, brute-forcing a 256-bit private key remains infeasible. A 256-bit key has 2^256 possible combinations — approximately 1.1579 × 10^77 possibilities. This number dwarfs the estimated 10^78 to 10^82 atoms in the observable universe. Random guessing a private key is equivalent to searching for a single atom across cosmic scales. The myth of "24 words unlocking Satoshi's fortune" periodically resurfaces, especially during Bitcoin price movements.
Importantly, all blockchain transactions are transparent. As of 2025, no outgoing transactions have ever been recorded from Satoshi's known addresses. Any successful access attempt would be instantly visible on-chain. Thus, these viral memes are nothing more than clickbait exploiting technical naivety.
