Throughout 2025, social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), have been flooded with posts claiming that a simple sequence of 24 words could unlock Satoshi Nakamoto’s estimated 1.1 million bitcoin holdings—worth approximately $111 billion as of November 2025. One viral post from November 10 stated: “Fun fact: 24 words in the right order can unlock 111 billion. That fact should scare you.” However, this is a dangerous misconception.
Why BIP39 Doesn't Apply to Satoshi's Wallets
Alex Thorn, lead researcher at Galaxy Digital, and Sani, an on-chain analyst and operator of timechainindex.com, quickly debunked the claim. “Fake news, dumb slop,” Thorn replied. He explained that Satoshi’s coins are spread across many pay-to-public-key (P2PK) addresses, meaning many public-private key pairs, not a single wallet. “But even worse: hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallets (BIP-32) and mnemonic seed phrases (BIP-39) weren’t invented until 2012/2013.”
The BIP39 standard was proposed on September 10, 2013, as a way to represent cryptographic keys using a list of 2,048 words, enabling 12- or 24-word recovery phrases with 128 to 256 bits of entropy. This system has become universal in modern cryptocurrency wallets, but Satoshi Nakamoto was last publicly active on December 12, 2010—nearly three years before BIP39 existed. His early Bitcoin software generated raw 256-bit private keys stored directly in wallet files, without any mnemonic conversion.
Chain Data Confirms No Seed Phrase Can Work
Blockchain explorers like Blockchair, mempool.space, and Arkham Intelligence publicly track Satoshi’s addresses. These addresses have never sent a transaction since 2010. Sani emphasized the scale: “22,471 private keys to be exact, to unlock 1,123,540 BTC. Good luck to all those brave retarded souls who think they can crack even 1 of those.” Even if someone possessed a hypothetical 24-word phrase, it would not interface with the original key structure because the underlying generation method predates BIP39 by years.
The often-cited “scare factor” overlooks the fact that mnemonic-based attacks are technically irrelevant to Satoshi’s wallets. Modern brute-force attempts against a 256-bit key remain mathematically infeasible: 2^256 possibilities (approximately 1.1579 x 10^77) dwarfs the estimated number of atoms in the observable universe (around 10^80). Current global computing power at 10^21 operations per second would require an average of 1.8 x 10^48 years to crack one key—far exceeding the universe’s 13.8 billion-year age.

Social media posts that ignore these technical realities continue to gain traction: the original “fun fact” post received over 1,200 likes, while Thorn’s reply earned only 389 and Sani’s just 77. This disparity highlights persistent gaps in cryptocurrency education. As Bitcoin’s design ensures long-term security through cryptographic principles dating back to 2009, understanding the historical context of wallet standards is crucial for both investors and enthusiasts. The truth is simple: Satoshi’s fortune is safe, and no 24-word seed phrase can touch it.
