Scallop Protocol, a next-generation peer-to-peer money market built on the Sui blockchain, has rapidly emerged as the leading DeFi protocol on the network since its launch in May 2023. As of January 18, 2024, Scallop’s total value locked (TVL) reached an all-time high of $64 million, making it the number one DeFi protocol on Sui and the top lending protocol in the ecosystem.

Sui’s Scalability Advantage

Sui blockchain employs a unique horizontal scaling architecture that processes multiple transactions in parallel, achieving instant finality and security while keeping transaction fees low even under high demand. This environment has proven ideal for DeFi growth, with Sui’s overall TVL surpassing $340 million recently. Scallop’s success is a clear reflection of Sui’s efficiency.

Comprehensive Financial Services

Scallop offers institutional-grade features, including tools for building Sui Programmable Transaction Blocks (PTxs), the Scallop SDK for protocol interaction, Sui Kit (TypeScript SDK), and sCoins (Scallop Market Coins) enabling zero-cost flash loans. Users can lend and borrow major stablecoins (USDC, USDT), SUI, and CETUS (the native token of Cetus DEX). Scallop rewards both lenders and borrowers through bi-weekly incentive programs, fueling ecosystem participation.

Exponential Growth and Milestones

In Q4 2023 and early 2024, Scallop experienced exponential TVL growth. Besides the $64M TVL record, the protocol has achieved a cumulative lending and borrowing volume of $4.2 billion and a total flash loan volume of $205 million. More recent milestones include: $5 billion in lending/borrowing volume, $200 million in flash loans, over 1.5 million Sui mainnet wallet addresses interacting with the protocol, and three other DeFi protocols built on top of Scallop.

Notably, Scallop is the first DeFi project to receive an official grant from the Sui Foundation and has won multiple awards at Sui Builder House hackathons.

2024 Roadmap and $SCA Token

Within the first two weeks of 2024, the Scallop team shipped two major updates: a UI upgrade for the dApp and integration with Aftermath Finance to launch Scallop Swap, a tool allowing users to execute multiple swaps simultaneously.

Q1 2024 is set to be a pivotal period with the planned launch of the native token $SCA. Phase 1 has already rewarded early supporters who supplied and borrowed assets from the beginning, as well as active community members. Phase 2 focuses on lenders and borrowers: over a two-week period, users earn points that can be exchanged for “Mystery Pearls,” which determine the final $SCA allocation each participant receives.

Team and Vision

The Scallop team comprises experts from cybersecurity, fintech, DeFi, and quantitative trading backgrounds. Their mission is to build a comprehensive monetary market leveraging Sui’s composability and security, with robust risk management and ongoing user support. By emphasizing security best practices, Scallop aims to reduce malicious behavior in DeFi and provide a trustworthy platform.

As the Sui ecosystem continues to expand, Scallop is well-positioned to maintain its leadership and serve as a critical bridge between traditional finance and decentralized finance.
