BlockBeats reported on June 21 that Serenity published a note correcting what it described as a common market misunderstanding of SIVE. According to Serenity, SIVE should not be viewed merely as a laser supplier for CPO scale-up. Instead, Serenity said SIVE’s lasers are involved across a wider set of next-generation optical connectivity architectures, including pluggable optical modules, CPO scale-out, CPO scale-up and NPO.
Serenity Reframes SIVE’s Role Across Optical Connectivity
Serenity’s argument is that SIVE is not positioned as a narrow component supplier for one specific CPO vertical expansion use case. In its view, SIVE occupies several scenarios within the next phase of optical interconnect development. This includes CPO scale-up, which refers to improving the interconnect bandwidth among GPUs or accelerators inside a single AI server or rack, but also extends to pluggable modules, CPO scale-out and NPO architectures.
The strongest supporting evidence cited by Serenity comes from the cooperation between Sivers and JBL. The two sides jointly developed a 1.6T optical transceiver using CW lasers. Serenity said this design effectively bypasses the capacity bottleneck of EML, or electro-absorption modulated lasers, while also consuming less power. Jabil management described the moat around the solution as “quite deep,” a statement that Serenity used as a central example for why SIVE should not be categorized too narrowly.
Pluggable Module Makers Have Reached Out After Jabil’s Announcement
Serenity further disclosed that, after Jabil’s announcement, other pluggable optical module manufacturers proactively contacted SIVE. According to Serenity, these efforts should currently be at the joint development or certification stage. The related progress has not yet been made public, and Serenity said it could turn into new announcements at any time. Because most optical module manufacturers, apart from Lumentum, are not vertically integrated, Serenity argued that Sivers’ position as an independent laser supplier becomes especially important within this supply chain structure.
Looking at a longer timeline, Serenity separated CPO scale-out and CPO scale-up into different stages of industry development. It said CPO scale-out will begin in the second half of 2026, citing POET as an example and noting that SIVE is POET’s laser supplier. CPO scale-up, meanwhile, is expected to see volume ramping in the second half of 2027, driven by Ayar and Nvidia’s NVLink CPO ecosystem. Serenity described that period as the core volume expansion node for the broader optical connectivity track.
The 2027 Supply Chain Node
Serenity said that, based on the supply chain map, SIVE surpasses other players at that node because it very likely began design cooperation years ago with companies including Marvell Celestial, Lightmatter and Lightelligence. In addition, SIVE has already become a reference laser at foundries such as GlobalFoundries, or GFS. Large manufacturers including O-Net are also building ELS solutions based on SIVE, with the target directed toward the supply chains of Asian hyperscale cloud providers.
According to Serenity’s conclusion, from 2027 onward SIVE will appear in nearly all new optical connectivity architectures. For that reason, Serenity described it as its preferred long position among laser bottleneck targets. BlockBeats added that CPO scale-out refers to optical interconnects across cabinets and clusters, used for data-center-level network expansion. CPO scale-up refers to using CPO inside a single AI server or rack to improve interconnect bandwidth among GPUs or accelerators.
