SFx Money App resumed full access on May 20 after weeks of recovery from an AWS failure in Bahrain on April 1. Upgrades include a migration from MongoDB to PostgreSQL, a switch to a more secure AWS region, multi-backup systems, and a decentralized architecture with redundancy layers. Users must complete account recovery and verification.

Nicosia, Cyprus-based fintech SFx has officially relaunched its Money App after a major infrastructure disruption that began on April 1, when an Amazon Web Services (AWS) facility in Bahrain suffered an outage. The incident affected multiple businesses globally that relied on the same cloud infrastructure, and SFx users temporarily lost access to their accounts and funds in main wallets.

A weeks-long recovery, migration, and upgrade process culminated in full platform access being restored on May 20. During the downtime, SFx implemented contingent measures: users could still access virtual card wallet addresses, top up virtual cards, and make payments through the virtual card service. The company also opened a dedicated request process allowing customers to transfer funds from their main account balance to card wallets or request withdrawals via bank transfer.

Database and Infrastructure Migration: MongoDB to PostgreSQL, AWS Region Change

To strengthen resilience, SFx completed several technical upgrades. The database system was migrated from MongoDB to PostgreSQL while the platform was moved to a more secure AWS region. Multiple backup systems, including local backups, were enabled, and the overall architecture was shifted toward a more decentralized model with multiple redundancy and recovery layers.

According to SFx, these changes are intended to reduce the likelihood of similar disruptions in the future and improve reliability, security, and long-term stability.

Users Required to Complete Account Recovery and Verification

With the platform back online, users must go through an account recovery and verification process to regain full access to their accounts and balances. SFx emphasized that the extra verification steps are designed to protect account security and user funds during the recovery phase. Muqaddis Atau Kolawole, Co-Founder and Head of Marketing & Design at SFx, said, “The relaunch of SFx Money App is more than bringing the app back online; it represents resilience, growth, and our commitment to doing better for our users. The past few weeks tested us in ways we did not anticipate, but they also pushed us to rebuild with stronger systems, clearer communication, and a renewed sense of responsibility to our community. We are grateful to every user who stayed patient with us through this period, and as we move forward, our focus remains on rebuilding trust, delivering value, and creating a more reliable experience for everyone who believes in the vision of SFx Money App.”

SFx acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the downtime and thanked users for their patience and continued support. Looking ahead, the company said it remains committed to building accessible, borderless financial tools that simplify cross-border payments and digital finance globally, with infrastructure development and platform resilience as top long-term priorities.
