Sharplink Gaming has significantly deepened its Ethereum treasury strategy, lifting its total holdings to 270,000 ETH after a string of high-profile purchases, including a direct transaction with the Ethereum Foundation. The company, listed on Nasdaq under SBET, is now described as the largest public-company holder of ETH.
The most notable transaction was the direct acquisition of 10,000 ETH from the Ethereum Foundation for $25.72 million, priced at $2,572.37 per ETH. According to the report, the deal closed on July 10 and stands out as a relatively rare on-chain transfer between a public company and the organization at the center of Ethereum protocol development.
A Three-Step Buying Spree
Sharplink did not stop with the foundation purchase. Just two days later, on July 12, the company bought an additional 21,487 ETH worth about $64.26 million through Galaxy Digital and Coinbase Prime. It then followed with another tranche on July 14, acquiring 16,374 ETH for roughly $48.85 million.
These transactions pushed Sharplink’s aggregate ETH position to 270,000 ETH. Based on the source material, the company’s average acquisition cost is approximately $2,667 per ETH. At the valuation referenced in the report, Sharplink is sitting on an unrealized gain of more than $81 million.
Ethereum as a Core Treasury Asset
The broader significance of the purchases lies in Sharplink’s treasury positioning. The company has framed Ethereum not as a tactical trade but as a foundational balance-sheet asset. This places Sharplink among a growing class of publicly traded firms willing to use crypto as a strategic treasury reserve, while differentiating itself by centering that strategy on ETH rather than bitcoin.
The report explicitly compares Sharplink’s approach to the accumulation model associated with Strategy, which became known for adopting bitcoin as a primary treasury asset. In Sharplink’s case, however, the emphasis is on Ethereum’s role not only as a store of value but also as a productive digital asset tied to staking and broader web3 infrastructure.
Leadership Frames the Move as Long-Term Commitment
Joseph Lubin, chairman of Sharplink and co-founder of Ethereum, characterized the transaction as a long-term commitment rather than a short-term market bet. In comments cited by the report, Lubin said the company is acquiring, staking, and restaking ETH as part of a broader stewardship approach. He argued that this process removes supply from circulation and helps reinforce the health of the Ethereum ecosystem.
That framing is important because it suggests Sharplink sees Ethereum exposure as extending beyond simple price appreciation. By incorporating staking and restaking, the company appears to be aligning its treasury strategy with Ethereum’s native yield mechanisms and network participation model.
Why the Foundation Deal Matters
The direct purchase from the Ethereum Foundation carries symbolic weight. The foundation plays a central role in supporting protocol development and the growth of Ethereum’s broader ecosystem. A transaction of this kind can therefore be read as a signal of institutional confidence in ETH as a strategic asset, especially when the buyer is a public company operating under market scrutiny and disclosure expectations.
It also highlights the increasingly formal market infrastructure around large digital-asset allocations. After the foundation purchase, Sharplink used established institutional channels such as Galaxy Digital and Coinbase Prime for subsequent buys, underscoring how large ETH acquisitions are being routed through a mix of ecosystem-native and institutional trading venues.
A New Benchmark for Public-Company ETH Exposure
With 270,000 ETH on its balance sheet, Sharplink is rapidly positioning itself as a reference point for institutional Ethereum accumulation. The company’s pace of buying, the size of its allocations, and the involvement of major counterparties collectively make the strategy one of the more visible treasury pivots in the public markets.
Whether other listed firms will follow remains an open question, but Sharplink has clearly moved to define itself around Ethereum in the way some companies have tied their identity to bitcoin reserves. For now, the company’s latest purchases mark another sign that ETH is being treated by some corporate buyers as more than a speculative asset: it is increasingly being positioned as a long-duration strategic holding tied to network participation, treasury diversification, and ecosystem conviction.
