At the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami, attendees listened to a historic phone call: the first public interview with Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht since his arrest in 2013. Speaking from the maximum-security prison in Tucson, Arizona, Ulbricht discussed how Bitcoin is "transforming the global economy" and shared his reflections on the rise of cryptocurrency. Shortly after the interview was broadcast, the official Free Ross Twitter account reported that Ulbricht was placed in solitary confinement (the "hole") as punishment for the media appearance.

First Interview in Eight Years: Watching Bitcoin Grow from Prison

Ulbricht’s voice was heard by attendees via a pre-recorded phone interview conducted by Bitcoin Magazine. “I’ve spent the last eight years watching Bitcoin grow up from in here,” he said, noting that he was present during the network’s earliest days when there were few altcoins and forks. Despite his incarceration, Ulbricht described the crypto ecosystem as one big "family" and expressed admiration for the community’s resilience. “I’ve seen incredible innovation. I’ve seen inspiring courage,” he stated. “We didn't know how things would turn out for Bitcoin back in the beginning, but over the years, I’ve been continually impressed with what you’ve accomplished — We are transforming the global economy. We have brought a taste of freedom and equality to far corners of the world. I know we can transform criminal justice, too.”

Reflecting on Silk Road: A 26-Year-Old’s Impatient Dream

Ulbricht’s case has been widely criticized as a "miscarriage of justice," with over 250 organizations and global leaders calling for clemency. A Change.org petition has garnered 433,845 signatures, arguing that his non-violent offenses and the abusive nature of his investigation and sentencing warrant mercy. In the interview, Ulbricht admitted that Silk Road was a rash decision born of youthful idealism. “I thought with Bitcoin, I could try and do something that actually makes a difference — Back then, I was impatient. I rushed ahead with my first idea, which was Silk Road… That's a 26-year-old who thinks he has to save the world before someone beats him to it. I had no idea Silk Road would work, but now we all know it caught on. It was used to sell drugs, and now I'm in prison.” He found it ironic that his quest for "freedom, privacy, equality" led him to a place "where those things don't exist."

Bitcoin’s Power and the Injustice of Solitary Confinement

Despite his circumstances, Ulbricht remains optimistic about Bitcoin’s potential. “Bitcoin is strong. Bitcoin is powerful. We are powerful. And our work is not over,” he stressed. The interview resonated deeply with the Bitcoin 2021 audience, many of whom view Ulbricht as a martyr for digital freedom. However, the Free Ross Twitter account reported that following the broadcast, Ulbricht was placed in the Special Housing Unit (SHU), commonly known as "the hole." “Please keep Ross in your thoughts & prayers,” the account tweeted on June 8. The incident has reignited debate over prison conditions and the disproportionate punishment faced by non-violent digital offenders. Ulbricht’s words — despite the setback — serve as a rallying cry for the crypto community to continue building a more equitable financial system while also advocating for criminal justice reform.
