Solana Name Service (SNS) will pause .sol domain registrations on August 17 to run an eligibility snapshot. Existing .sol holders at snapshot time will keep their original domain under the .sns suffix, while receiving a free same-name .sol domain; ownership is tied to wallet holdings at the moment of the snapshot. Domains kept on exchanges must be moved to self-custody wallets beforehand, and if a domain is listed for sale, the new domain will go to the listing wallet. .sns registration reopens in early to mid-September. The upgrade is meant to eventually let .sol be used as a regular web address in browsers; SNS has previously supported Solana Foundation's application to ICANN for .sol as a top-level domain, a process likely to take years with an uncertain outcome. New .sol domains will initially lack resolution, records, and subdomain features; eligible wallets automatically receive them between late September and early October, with resolution and trading abilities activating from Q4 2026 to Q1 2027.

Solana Name Service (SNS) announced that .sol domain registrations will be paused on August 17 to prepare for an upcoming eligibility snapshot. Under the plan, users who hold a .sol domain at the moment of the snapshot will end up with two domains: the original one, which will be displayed as .sns and stay in the same wallet, plus a newly issued same-name .sol domain that is distributed free of charge. Ownership is determined by wallet holdings at the exact snapshot time.

If a domain is held on an exchange, it must be moved to a self-custody wallet before the snapshot takes place. If it is currently listed for sale, the new .sol domain will be sent to the wallet that created the listing. Registration for .sns domains will then reopen between early and mid-September.

SNS says the shift is designed to let .sol eventually function as a standard web address in browsers. It has previously backed the Solana Foundation's application to ICANN to register .sol as a top-level domain — a process expected to take years, with the final outcome still uncertain.

Newly received .sol domains will not support resolution, records, or subdomains at first. Those capabilities are expected to roll out in the final stages. Wallets that qualify will automatically get their new .sol domains from late September to early October. The domain's resolution and trading features will then be activated from Q4 2026 through Q1 2027.
