Digital financial services company SoFi Technologies (Nasdaq: SOFI) announced on June 25, 2025, that it will reintroduce cryptocurrency investing and launch a blockchain-powered global remittance service later this year. The move signals a major acceleration in the company's digital asset strategy, backed by improved regulatory clarity and strong financial performance.
Crypto Investing Returns: Bitcoin and Ethereum Trading
SoFi stated that its members will be able to buy, sell, and hold a selection of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). This marks the company's official return to the crypto investment space after pausing such services in 2023. CEO Anthony Noto emphasized, “Crypto and blockchain innovations can and will be threaded through each of our businesses and capabilities, including buying, paying, saving, investing, borrowing, and protecting.” The company also plans to expand into stablecoins, staking, and crypto-backed lending in the near future.
Blockchain Remittances: Disrupting Cross-Border Payments
The new international remittance service will allow SoFi Money members to send funds globally via blockchain networks, converting U.S. dollars into local currencies for near-instant settlement. The service promises full transparency on fees and exchange rates, targeting the massive cross-border payment market — the World Bank reported that U.S. outbound remittances exceeded $93 billion in 2023. SoFi aims to undercut traditional players that often charge high fees and take days to process transactions.
Record Financials and Regulatory Advantage
SoFi reported record net revenue of $772 million and net income of $71 million in the first quarter of 2025. Membership grew 34% year-over-year to 10.9 million, and total assets reached $37.75 billion. Crucially, SoFi Bank N.A. has received federal clearance from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to provide crypto custody and stablecoin reserve services. This regulatory green light uniquely positions SoFi as a regulated bank that can also offer cutting-edge blockchain products.
Future Plans: Stablecoins, Staking, and More
Beyond the initial offerings, SoFi revealed plans to integrate stablecoin services, staking rewards, and crypto-backed loans. Its technology arm, Galileo, will develop blockchain infrastructure for institutional clients. Noto concluded, “The future of financial services is being completely reinvented through innovations in crypto, digital assets, and blockchain more broadly. We’re accelerating our efforts to give members more choice and more control.” With regulatory compliance and strong membership growth, SoFi is poised to become a leading hybrid platform bridging traditional banking and decentralized finance.
