Digital financial services company SoFi Technologies (Nasdaq: SOFI) announced on June 25 that it will introduce blockchain-powered global remittances and relaunch cryptocurrency investing later this year. The move marks a significant return to digital assets after a pause of over a year. CEO Anthony Noto stated: "The future of financial services is being completely reinvented through innovations in crypto, digital assets, and blockchain more broadly."
SoFi Reenters Crypto with Dual Offering
SoFi's new initiative pairs two major services: self-service international money transfers via blockchain networks, and the ability for members to buy, sell, and hold select cryptocurrencies like bitcoin (BTC) and ethereum (ETH). The company said this is part of a broader strategy to thread crypto and blockchain innovations across all business lines, including buying, paying, saving, investing, borrowing, and protecting. In the first quarter of 2025, SoFi reported record net revenue of $772 million and net income of $71 million. Total membership increased 34% year-over-year to 10.9 million, and total assets reached $37.75 billion.
Blockchain Remittances: Disrupting Cross-Border Payments
The international remittance service will allow SoFi Money members to transfer funds globally through blockchain networks, converting U.S. dollars into local currencies for near-instant settlement while providing full transparency on fees and exchange rates. This move targets the traditional cross-border payment market, which saw U.S. outbound remittances exceed $93 billion in 2023. SoFi stated: "We’re building a future where people can seamlessly send money around the world and have the tools and education to safely use crypto and digital assets."
Crypto Investing Returns with BTC, ETH
SoFi had previously paused its crypto trading services in early 2023 amid regulatory uncertainty. Now, with renewed clarity from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), which recently issued guidance allowing national banks to provide crypto custody and stablecoin reserve services, SoFi Bank N.A. has obtained federal clearance to operate in this space. The company plans to expand its crypto offerings to include stablecoins, staking, crypto-backed lending, and blockchain infrastructure via its technology arm, Galileo.
Unique Position: Regulated Banking Meets Blockchain Innovation
SoFi's dual identity as both a fintech and a national bank gives it a unique regulatory advantage. Anthony Noto emphasized that the company is accelerating efforts to give members more choice and control. With a strong financial base and growing membership, SoFi is positioning itself at the intersection of established banking and emerging blockchain technology. Analysts see this as a bullish signal for the broader fintech sector, as demand for digital assets continues to surge. SoFi's comprehensive approach could set a template for how traditional financial institutions embrace crypto in a fully regulated environment.
