The Solana Foundation announced a strategic partnership with Google Cloud on Tuesday to launch Pay.sh, a micropayment pipeline designed specifically for AI agents. The system allows AI bots to settle API calls using stablecoins on Solana, with per-call costs as low as $0.005, eliminating traditional monthly subscription fees.
Wallet as Identity, No Credentials Required
Pay.sh runs an API proxy server on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) that sits between AI agents and backend services such as BigQuery and Gemini. An agent’s Solana wallet serves as its sole identity—no Google account or rotating API keys needed. The system integrates Coinbase’s x402 protocol as a gateway and also supports the Machine Payment Protocol (MPP) developed by Tempo and Stripe. Users fund their agent with stablecoins or credit cards; the agent can then autonomously discover and pay for APIs.
Microtransactions Replace Subscriptions: $0.005 per Call
The Solana Foundation highlighted that under the old model, developers often paid $29 per month for APIs they rarely used. Pay.sh breaks costs down to individual calls, typically less than one cent ($0.005). AI agents can query multiple providers simultaneously and choose the cheapest option without being locked into a single vendor.
Over 50 service providers have already joined, including Helius, Alchemy, Dune Analytics, and Nansen. “No subscriptions. No minimum spend. Your agent consumes exactly what it needs, nothing more,” the Foundation said in the announcement.
Coinbase engineer Erik Reppel, creator of the x402 protocol, noted that the market has long lacked a viable micropayment infrastructure due to reliance on API keys and subscriptions. With Solana and Google Cloud, the settlement layer for the agent economy is now taking shape.
