Solana core development team Anza said the second feature gate in proposal SIMD-0437 is scheduled to go live on the beta mainnet at 5:15 on Sept. 12 during epoch 1033. Once activated, rent per byte will fall from 6,333 lamports to 5,080 lamports. Anza said that would bring the cumulative reduction in rent to 27% from the initial level.
SIMD-0437 contains five feature gates in total and is designed to cut Solana’s per-byte storage cost by 90% overall. After all five are completed, the rent figure would move from 6,960 lamports to 696 lamports. Anza also said the rent-exempt deposit for token accounts would drop from about $0.16 to about $0.016.
The team added that there is no fixed schedule between stages. According to Anza, the third feature gate will only be activated after the safety of state growth is confirmed. If needed, proposal SIMD-0438 can be used as a rollback mechanism.
